Default 2x6 0r 2x8 rocker replacement sliders

ok so im talking with a guy at work about haveing him weld in rocker replacement sliders. i allways see every one do the 2x6 but im thinking of doing 2x8 so i have a good step to stand on for getting to the stuff in my roof rack when i get one. so just wanting to know if this is a bad idea or what. also i have 4" lift on my 92 xj and im short and fat is the reason for wanting the step.

if you do 2x8 i would definately tie them into the frame. there would be a lot more leverage when you come down on them putting extra stress on the sheet metal they are welded to.

might be a good idea. maybe some skateboard grip tape on them for traction. I had 2x6 and just opened the doors and stepped on the door sills to get on my roof.

heres a couple pics showing how far the 2x6 sticks out. good for protecting the doors.

i have heard that if you cut this out that it makes the frame actually weaker bc your cut out the frames main end supports and that it will sag after a while bc i was looking into doing this and putting a tube on it to make a step but if yours is just a trail rig then go for it but not designed for dd's

X2

I plug welded some 1"x1/4" strap through the sill and into the 2x which provides a good surface to weld to also.

Replacing stamped sheetmetal with 2x6 box tubing makes the jeep weaker? And making a jeep weaker is fine for wheeling but shouldnt do it on the street?

You have heard wrong.

wait why not go with 2x4 (or whatever fits flush) and add on a bent piece of DOM that sticks out as a side step/slider

Same work for the 2x4 and 2x6 except on the 2x4 you then have to get tube, bend it and weld it on so the 2x6 is a lot easier

I'd do 2x6 and weld 2x1 to it on the outside unless you can find somewhere that sells a 2x7. I can see having more footing beyond 6" but 8" seems like it would be too much.

Default 2x6 will do grasshopper, 2x8 for extreme ninja XJ

2x6 vs 2x8 Depends how deep your goin in. I had no floor, really no floor, so the back of my 2x6 (3/16 wall thickness) was set so the radius was inside my door base runner edge. Didn't leave as much exterior is I had expected, in hindsight I would have opted for 2x8. I would have preferred more stick out. If you have good floors and are just setting into the rocker, then a 2x6 will be fine. As a second note, measure across door B pillare to door B pillar. I should have ratchet strapped mine to pull in tighter, would have had better door seal as they sprung when all was cut apart. Either way Cut your way in and Weld your way out. Weld the begesus out of it. Strength, well I can put my jack under either rail and lift three tires off the ground and still open and close the doors. No strenght problem. Recommend you opt for 3/16 wall thickness, 1/8 is too light and 1/4 is great if you plan to baja, 3/16 will do you well in 99% of recreational wheelin. About 100 pics on my profile album of this rebuild.
