what did you pay for your xj?
I paid $500 for my 99 xj. Six months prior the previous owner had $2500 in engine work done including a new head, water pump, etc etc. Mileage is 159k. He was going to college and his mom was tired of dumping money into it so he could destroy it wheeling.

Paid $550 for my '87 Pioneer, it has 229k and some issues, but I think that's not a bad price at all for a running driving XJ, especially considering it came with nice ZJ wheels with good tires. The seller also threw in 2 of the stock rims with good tires so I should be able to sell those and recoup about $50.

Bought mine about a month ago for $3000. It has 168xxx miles on it, but runs like new. The guy I bought it from put the new Jeep Liberty wheels on it with some rough country tires.

$800 completely stock, 160k miles, with a steering fluid leak-$80 and a hiccup (that I still haven't fixed).

I have also put tint on it (not in pic) which cost $180.
