And after a long hiatus I'm back. I still have the jeep at my parents' place but don't use it really. It's holding up nice just sitting outside in California. I've gained degrees, have started a career, and I still want to keep this thing.
First order of business:
What a different world the internet is since 2009. I read my first post and maybe it was just the exuberance of youth and my first car but it's hard to imagine the internet as a nice little living room where people share their passions right now. I hope Cherokeeforum is still as nice a place as the one that so warmly welcomed me when I joined a decade ago.
I really appreciate this thing as a simple, durable, useful vehicle, even though EVs have entered the scene. There are thermodynamic hurdles that may never be satisfied by EV technology. Additionally, environmental concerns about gasoline can be satisfied with biofuels which should be able to utilize ICE engines just fine.
I think sticking with this thing for the long run will be worth it.
Anyways, I fixed a headgasket on my other car recently so I feel like I'm up for a full restore of my jeep (as a weekend thing of course). I envision a sort of more land rover-y vehicle in the end (although this just may be because the stock 95 interior is that bad).
Have these things gone up in value? I'm curious. Cheers.

Yes, in general, they have gone up in value. For nice examples. They don't seem to have hit the 10k mark like the TJs have. But they are routinely in the 7k range for rust-free low-ish miles.
If it's a 96, it is worth 1...BILLLLIONNNN (Dr. Evil Voice) dollars.

Welcome.
I recently came back after a 7 year hiatus. Of course, the new purchase of another XJ brought me back.
Couldn't believe I had over 800 posts when I came back as I never felt that active. I must have been a busy younger man back then. Certainly more free time. The forums don't seem quite as active as they once were. Maybe it's just me.
Rover-y, or "Overland" builds have become more popular over the past three years or so. I think a lot of the demographic has migrated there. Smaller lifts, more practical but sometimes ridiculous mods and nick-nacks. I've even seen guys put mobile showers in their XJ's. I think it has something to do with the whole minimalist living/van life movement. I like them personally when the right vehicle and budget is chosen.

Welcome back.
I am fairly new here compared to some of the veterans but I've been on automotive forums for 12 years or so. I lurked here for quite awhile before registering and it didnt take me long at all to realize what a pleasant place on the internet this is. I've been on some awful message boards over the years but this is great.
Alot of the declining use of forums is due to Facebook pretty much ruling the internet with younger people that are jnto anything automotive. And most of those people dont want to read and research just be spoon fed answers. I'm stay away from that 100% I dont want any part of it.

WELCOME back!!

And here I thought I was asking too much for my '96 at 3/4 of a million! Which includes our '96 Blazer (the "anti-Christ).
I don't even do cell phones so I can be the one to turn the lights when the forum folds.

I joined 10 plus years ago and sold my XJ due to a divorce. Came back several years ago with a new project. I recently sold that and bought a TJ. If I had the space I'd keep both at least one XJ and a TJ. I'm sure I'll be back at some point with another XJ. They kind of get in your blood.

Benefits: chip key, better airbags, interior aesthetics 100x better, OBDII (I have a scangauge on my civic b/c the speedometer broke, but I'm in data science and like working w data, would love to have this on a jeep), supposedly more aerodynamic (the '99 got 19mpg highway vs. 18 mpg EPA, is this why?)
Owning multiple jeeps is a worthy endeavor.
