On another XJ forum, a guy in Kenosha posted this:

A Sheriff pulled over my buddy, ct member "ktowncrawler" for driving his xj doorless. Like what mudd said, the officer told him if the vehicle did not come factory with removable doors, you cannot drive doorless. The officer told him it could be a tube door but must be hinged and have a latch. He recieved a ticket, but drives in town often with no trouble from the city police. Seems like the Sheriffs tend to enforce things like that more.
Don't know if that helps you out at all as county laws may be different.

I was pulled over in my XJ when I first had my front doors off. Cop asked me a few questions about it, went to his car for 10 or so minutes, came back and took my name and number saying he was going to look into it more for me as he couldn't see/find and reason for it to be illegal, but wanted me to know incase I get pulled over again.

He seemed pretty interested, and said it was the only time he's dealt with a doorless rig lol. He said the only problem he can see with it is in the case of an accident it may change how the damage occurs.. but that that isn't illegal, just potentially more unsafe (also only running the mirror on the windshield). Now I'm 4 doorless for the last few months, and no problems since (knock on wood).

cops around my area tend to be jerks, but so far I've not been pulled over for being doorless. I do have a full cage and 4 point harnesses in plain sight though. Granted i drove around for almost a year before I got pulled over for having a blue neon licence plate frame, so who knows what the future holds?

If I ever get a ticket, I will be sure to post the ordinance or statute number.

Til then my doors stay off, and they can pound sand.

I think a lot of people get pulled over for being doorless, but don't seem to be lots of people being ticketed for running without doors.
It could be just a visual that causes the police to think they should take a look at the vehicle to see what all is wrong with it. ( As in that is my excuse for the pull over, but maybe I'll check everything out and get him for something else. )

Its just an excuse to pull you over to see if you're doing anything illegal.

Ok guys look, Im no law professor but its simple. Do research. Every state has different vehicle laws governing what one can and cannot do. As we all know, Cali has some of the dumbest car laws on the books, but Georgia really dont care what you do as long as you can see out the windshield basically. Go to your states DMV office or website and research laws regarding modding vehicles. There is a wealth of info out there, you just need to look. If you get pulled and you know you are in the right, dont argue, take it to court. Odds are the citing officer will not appear and it will be tossed anyways. I know, I know, it takes time from work blah blah blah..... dont assume anything, do researsh and KNOW THE LAWS that the police dont.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. It's up to you. And each state and local jurisdiction will likely have differences. I have a BS in CJ from Sam Houston St. University where the dean's off. would sell t-shirts that read.. "you can break the law...you can obey the law.... or you can Be the law. And they ain't kidding. Police officers are the ambivalent force. They are on the front lines of enforcement. They can and do what they want to do. Laws are guidelines to be interpreted in any given situation.
