Here's my problem. My rear axle has no dicernable markings at all. My front axle has a 6 where to should say 30 and a metal tag that reads;
52098973 top line, and 73-61663-2 second line. Who can tell me (without counting teeth!) what my ratio is? In my experience, 3.23's run about 3000 at 70 mph and 4.11's run about 4000. Haven't had mine up that fast yet, especialy with OD locked out!

I second the 3:73s but they did have them with the 4.0 like his info states. I believe it had something to do with the factory tow option. My nephews 96 has the 4.0 and 3:73s also.

Either way, the ratio is always at lower left corner.. 3:73 was the only ratio that could have matched.
That ratio is most common on a V8 as i'm sure your aware, i just assumed.

I've got the 4.0L. It is quite possible I missed a digit. I will check. Thanks for your help. I still have to figure out weither the rear dif is a 35c or a 44. This car has a trailer hitch on it but I don't think it's set up with lights.

Country Boy, thanks. It looks like a 35 but has a rubber plug. Your photo looks to have a pipe plug in it, however this is a replacement cover. I've worked at Valvoline Instant Oil Change partime for over 10 years and I've never seen a jeep rear dif with a steel plug, however I don't remember doing any Wranglers. I can tell you, it isn't a 44. The shape just isn't right. I think you did me a favor and hit the nail for me. Thanks again. The people on this site are true friends.
Got a question. If I replace the whole rear assembly, and I find a good 44 with the right ratio, will it work?
