What do I need for a ZJ 4x4 conversion?!
Hi guys, I sort of inherited a jeep a few months ago and now I have time to start building another project, I have an axle housing, tcase, and differential, does anybody know a specific list or kit to find? Any pitfalls or specifics I should know? I’ve seen plenty of XJ 4wd conversions but I can’t seem to find a video or how to on a ZJ, is it the same? Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum.
What year, engine and transmission vehicle?
It is likely that the conversion is not worth the effort. If 4x4 is required, then selection of an alternative vehicle is a much better option.
Don't forget the tail cone of the transmission swap, w/ a mounting flange for the transfer case on a 4x4 vehicle, not a tail cone.

It's a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (ZJ) with the 4.0l i6, and as far as transmission I'm not entirely certain yet, I don't know if there were multiple transmissions offered for this vehicle at the time. the guy i got it from already has the T-case for the transmission currently in the jeep, (along with a spare identical t-case) a front axle from a 96 ZJ with no gear or axle shafts, just the axle tube, mounts for everything, and the caliper brackets, and two front driveshafts that i have to get U-Joints for. I'm more than willing to do the work, I just rebuilt the motor top to bottom this weekend.

The transmission is a 42RE for the '96 w/ the 4.0L engine.
The 4x4 vehicle has a tail cone w/ a flange, like in my prior image. The 2WD vehicle has a tail cone like this transmission.
Have fun w/ the conversion. Some parts will be from salvage yards, like the transfer case shift linkage, center console lever and trim.
The linkage pivot bracket is retained to the tunnel w/ screws that are accessed by carpet removal

Hey Wingless. It looks to me from the pics that the 2wd tail cone unbolts from the O/D unit whereas the t/case flange is part of it. Is that what I'm seeing? If that's the case, maybe you can swap the O/D unit on the 2wd tranny for one from a 4wd. In other words, use the guts of the 2wd transmission to make a 4wd transmission by just changing the O/D unit. I've never had the opportunity to see the parts laying on the floor before.

Dave, maybe. The 42RE image I linked may not be for a Jeep.
It should be possible to get a working OD end. then attach it to a working transmission half. Of course the clearances need to be measured, then set properly, using Miller tools 6311 and 6312, along with a vernier caliper.

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't be a bolt&go. He's gonna need driveshafts too. It sounds like an easy swap until you actually get into it. People don't realize this.

That's why I started with: "It is likely that the conversion is not worth the effort. If 4x4 is required, then selection of an alternative vehicle is a much better option."

The only time I got involved with stuff like this, we had a donor vehicle parked right beside the project so everything we needed was right there. That was a simple "cram a V8 with an auto in a 6 cylinder stick car." No computers to worry about.
