The 4x4 conversion is ON!!!
Today I went to Rockvale TN and pulled an AW4 with a NP231, transmission crossmember, a D30 front axle, and both driveshafts... from a 1996 XJ.
I also got a white hood to replace my fire-damaged one.
The only catch: I have to go back next Saturday to put my 2wd front axle back in his crashed XJ so he can take it to be scrapped.
a little extra work...
I already had a TC shifter and an 8.25 rear end w/3.55 gears.
Total cost so far: $300
My little 1991 2wd daily-driver will never be the same

I took it off of another XJ at Pull-a-Part... I got the shifter, upper and lower floor plates, and several linkage pieces. I'm relatively sure I got it all
I didn't want the transmission from that one. It had a nasty crack in the transfer case and the tail housing was broken from the forklift snagging the driveshaft.
If I don't have it all, I bet I know someone who has the last couple of bits I need

Don't take to long, this pile of dung goes to the scrap yard real soon. I need to make room to bring the 89 home and start working on it.

Things to do before Friday:
Weld-up left lower control arm bracket (broken and bent).
Replace leaking axle seals and reseal cover on D30.
Replace torque converter seal on the trans and both output shaft seals on the TC.
Buy front brake rotors (my 2wd rotors won't fit and the ones on the axle were pretty thin and rusty).
I would be working on it now, but it's pouring out and I'm pretty beat from pulling all those goodies this morning.

Awesome, I'm doing the same thing, mines also a 1991. I'm still looking for the transmission/transfercase though.
You are in it cheaper than I am too.

I originally wanted the earlier disco-type D30 where I could disengage it with a cable, but this non-disco 1996 D30 was convenient and cheap.

One more thing to check. What rear axle do you have and what was under the donor XJ? If they are the same then no worries. But if they are different then... The Chrysler 8.25 has a longer pinion than the Dana 35 making its driveshaft about 1.5 inches shorter. At stock heigth the 8.25 shaft will be long enough to connect to the D35 but may cause driveline vibs due to yoke being pulled out of the tcase that 1.5 inches. On the other hand a D 35 shaft will be to long to use for a 8.25 (unless you lift it about 3.5 inches). Just a thought on something to check.

I actually found a few but they are auto's. I like driving manuals but if I don't find one in the next month then I'll got the easy way and put in an auto.
I'll be running a disco axle, I wanted a non-disco but this one has 4.11's and when I scrap the donor heep, it'll be free.
