Dude I need something to help battle the heat. How thick is that stuff with the two coats you are putting on? Between the radiant heat from the exhaust and the engine and transmission my feet are roasting.

 

Two rolled coats provides over 40 dry mils. (Thickness of a dime)

In regards to the factory caulking, I started to grind it away a long time ago, but decided it wasn't worth the effort, and possibly detrimental since it does kind of seal up the inside. Not to mention it made a hell of a mess! I decided it would be fine to roll the Monstaliner over it after a bit of research over on JeepForum which is where there is much more chatter about Monstaliner.

Thanks Neiall! I'm not sure which support you're actually talking about, do you mean the vertical "crossmember" that goes the whole way across? Well, I decided that it wasn't really necessary to coat with Monstaliner. It'll be under the seat, and most of the action is going to be in front or behind that area. My girlfriend did cover the passenger side but I did not do the driver side in the interest of saving the ML for the important areas.

Wait, nevermind...you're talking about the braces for the FRONT seats! Ah. Well actually, i didn't get the Monstaliner inside of there, because it's basically impossible. I've seen others do it and I have no clue how. Not too worried about it.

 

It will likely not provide much insulation to the heat. I have the same issue, and my muffler has no heat shield. I will report back on how it is since Monstaliner is done, but have no experience with it yet until it's all back together. I think the 40 mils specification is pretty accurate with two coats, but it's going to vary in different areas depending on how loaded the roller was at the time, (how loaded YOU might be while applying it! LOL) and how much pressure you were using and such. It cures to a very uniform appearance.

 

Lmao yeah I will probably be a little loaded when I do it. I'm trying to find some sort of heat barrier I can apply to the bottom of the vehicle.. something like this

Yes, I have done a bit of research on this as well and also found my way to JEGs. That is probably the route I'll end up taking. I'd like to line the whole exterior of the tranny tunnel with it and follow the exhaust back with it. I just worry about attaching it and how it's going to hold up to conditions.

Very nice job. I used the Herculiner on my interior and I think it came pretty good but after doing the Monstaliner exterior I think I would have been a little happier doing all with with Monsta. I've seen a few people comment on the heat from the tranny and exhaust. If it is a problem in mine I may try some of the motorcycle exhaust tape or something and see how that goes.

 

Nice! Is the Herculiner difficult to clean like everyone says it is?

 

Haven't messed with it much since I put it in, but I have a little read on things. I think Herculiner has a more gritty surface for grip, not a bad thing for the whole floor mat type use but wouldn't be as nice on the exterior. On the down side crawling around in the back cargo area or something in shorts will lead to some skin left on it. It serves the purpose of being cheap and better than carpet for me but I'd spend a little extra next time I think.

 

Yeah, I've heard it's brutal on the skin, too. How long did you leave your Monstaliner cure for? I'm about a day and a half past the final coat...it looks awesome and feels very solid. I think I'm going to start putting it back together tomorrow. Should I wait?

 

I waited about 4 or 5 days if I remember right and that was more than enough. You should be fine with the couple of days you have on it. Probably just be a little careful not to bang sharp corners on it yet (like seat frames) that could gouge a spot that isn't 100%.

 

Well fellas, I got my interior back together finally. After slaving away all evening last night, lol! I also cut my original 4x4 shifter handle and welded on a CJ shifter **** I got last year at the York Jeep Show for $10 bucks. I think it came out pretty nice!

I ran out of weld wire right after these two blobs. Had to run to the hardware store quick before they closed so I could finish it up! [final result below]



Painted it up and while waiting for it to dry, I got to work on the rest of the interior.




I also replaced all trim panel screws with new stainless steel ones. It's the little things.




Reinstalled the shifter unit with stainless steel bolts. Painted with Rustoleum Premium.


Here you can see a spot that I missed along the center console. Well actually, my lovely girlfriend did this side! Haha, but we did not know that the center console wouldn't cover it. I'm ordering another quart of Monstaliner to correct this and also finish my doors.
