It's finally here!

Needless to say I'm pretty excited to get it painted and installed. Going with Rustoleum Hammered, same as the front bumper. I just need to drill some holes for the light wiring harnesses.

Looks great! I'm waiting for a Tailbone and Backbone from Detours. I almost did Nate's front and slimline rear as well but going to try and retain the factory color matched bumpers. Going for a factory type of look. I love your mod choices though; can't wait to see that beauty installed.

WOOHOO! 400th post! Well it's been a busy week/weekend, but I finally got the new Detours bumper and ZJ skid plate installed. Sorry, I'd have more/better pics, but my camera was lost since I moved and I only just found it yesterday.

I decided not to paint the ZJ skid in the interest of time and also because it's already in such good shape....I'll paint it one fine day. I painted the Detours bumper with Rustoleum Hammered (3 coats), and tried something different this time -- did 2 coats of clearcoat over it. It looks good, but it takes away the "hammered" texture. It does add some protection to the paint though, so I'm fine with it!

One challenge I ran into was the exhaust heat shield for the gas tank...I could not bolt it up to the unirail mounts as it did stock, so I chopped the top mount off, and cut the plate in half, and used some sheet metal screws to secure it to the skid plate.

The install was challenging since I had to drill new holes for the ZJ skid. I used my hitch as a template, but it's tough to get it perfect. I found when lining it up that I had to drill more to get everything to line up just perfectly. But, overall, I'm very happy with the turnout!
Here's a pic of the reverse lights that came with the bumper. They're not overly bright, but definitely a welcome addition. They complement my standard reverse LEDs pretty well. You can also see my daily driver there in the background!

I also had to trim the flat flares slightly to accomodate the integrated armor of the bumper. No biggie. Also, the Detours bumper came with a license plate extension bracket, but it was too short. I cut the end off of it and welded 7" extra inches of angle iron on, and painted it, and it's much better now. I will have to order a LED strip for the license plate since it's so far over now. I'll have more pics later!

Looks great! I have the Detours Backbone sitting here waiting for paint and installation. I used the Rustoleum Hammered black on my locking cargo box and it's nice but I think I'm going to try the Hammerite Rust Cap on the bumpers. Do you think the clearcoat will make touch up harder? Overall it looks like it turned out really well, even if you did lose the texture. The reverse lights are less intense than I thought they would be.
Does the ZJ skid fit well? I haven't got around to figuring out how I'm going to do the gas tank skid yet. It seems like the 97+ skids are very hard to find.
Nice work!

The reverse lights, eh, they are waterproof and strong, but not super bright but they do help some. What doesn't help is my tinted rear window. They actually look very bright in the night outside of the Jeep. The nice thing about them is that they don't draw much power, so I was able to wire them up to the factory harness without relays.
Does the ZJ skid fit well? Heh, well, it fits. I'll say that much. Just be ready to drill and drill (I used a 1/2" drill bit), and also in my case, the skid plate needed to be pushed apart some to line up just right. I used a 2x4 between it and the gas tank to achieve that...definitely want a helper for mounting the sucker. You might not have issues aligning it if your holes are drilled just right. Also, you're going to need to be sure you have either factory nut strips (probably rusty), or pick up a pair of JCR Nut strips. They're nice, and come with all the hardware you need. I had to chop mine in half to make room for the unibody inserts for the new bumper. Getting all of that to line up perfectly was the biggest challenge. But hey, for 40 bucks already pulled from the junkyard, I think it was worth it!
One thing to note about factory XJ gas tank skids vs. ZJ, is that the XJ skids (the ones I've seen anyway) actually mount under the tank straps. That means you have to drop the tank to mount one, and also, I'm not sure it provides near the protection that the ZJ skid does. It seems much beefier than any stock XJ gas tank skid I've seen.
Stock skid:
Just found this thread--

This guy doesn't realize that he actually has a ZJ skid plate and that's why he's having such trouble mounting it. I do like how he ended up doing it, though. He's in the same situation with the nut strips vs. Detours inserts vs. skid plate vs. hitch! There's a lot going on back there. I do wish I would've welded the Detours inserts to the now-chopped-in-half JCR Nut strips, that was a great idea.

Some goodies arrived today... Rugged Ridge SYE and LEDs. Ordered a fixture from SBL, but also a waterproof strip in case the fixture doesn't work out so well.
