The last puzzle piece for the rear suspension came in today. Some RE shackles.

As soon as I get the rear axle re-geared and the rear stiffeners welded in I will be able to get it all installed. Just need to order longer rear brake lines.

Taking the axles over to my buddies shop tonight, going to get the gears installed and set up tomorrow.

I'll try to post pics and any tips or issues along the way, his dad is a long time drag racer, has been building cars, engines, trans' etc for years. Definitely glad to have his help and knowledge.

First up, Dana 30.

Difference between the pinions.

New seals and races in.

Everything put together. Only had to change the pinion depth once by a few thou. Pattern was a little high up on the teeth of the ring gear.

Final backlash was 6 thou which I'm more than happy with. Didn't get any pictures of the pattern unfortunately but it was right on the money.

Next up is the 8.25, in all honesty I found the 8.25 easier to set up than the D30.

Photo of the new ring and pinion in place. The retainers for the backlash adjusters are not on in this photo.

Heres the backlash adjusters. They are threaded into the case and the caps, you just tighten and loosen accordingly to move your carrier side to side. You can either make a tool to insert down the axle tube to spin them, or we actually used a small spanner style wrench to reach in and spin them.

Next couple pics are photos of the final pattern, Im happy with it. Got the piñon depth right on the first try. Would up with 5-7 thou depending where on the gear we measured (measured in 4 spots)

I would have liked to take more photos during the process but I was trying to learn as much as possible from my gear mentor. If I had to re-gear them again I'm confident I could do it by myself, it really wasn't very difficult.

I didn't get a photo of how I notched the 8.25 ring so that the cross pin will slide in and out. You have to remove 1/8-1/4 inch of material from the edge of one tooth, and barely shave another. Ill snap a pic of that tomorrow if anyone wants to see. I'll be ordering a spartan locker for the rear and installing that before the rear axle goes back under the jeep.

All in all, it was a productive day. Plus my 703 injectors came in the mail today, ill be installing those soon.

Time to have a beer or 5 and relax.

Great job on the gearing, bud! I'm with cbs - I need to find a gear mentor. Won't be able to pay a shop to do mine for a pretty good while.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

If you guys were in my neighborhood id help you out without a doubt. Its really not very difficult, just requires some specialty tooling. Also makes it much easier to have the axles out of the jeep. Build is getting closer to being back on the trail, just need my 3 link to show up.

List of items left on the build.

Ordered or waiting for install:
-upgraded battery cables/grounds
-703 injectors
-Cav fab 3 link

Necessities: (will order soon)
- Steering box (mine is leaking from the input shaft seal)
- Spartan rear locker
- Rear disc conversion and ZJ/WJ booster
- Gas tank skid

Can wait for a little while, but on the list:
- DBO DIY Winch bumper
- Warn VR 10-s
- Build a rear bumper
- Build a low profile roof rack or tire carrier

Probably a Durango or ZJ box. Not really sure, don't want to drop a bunch of money on a PSC unit.
