Have you tried replacing the headlight? The low beam filament may have burned out in the bulb. The headlights are sealed beam, though, and you need to replace the whole unit. If this is the case, I recommend Sylvania Silverstars or an H4 upgrade.

Won't give you the cleanest or straightest cuts, but it should work.

Might just be time to invest in an angle grinder. They are fairly cheap, you can get one for less than 50 dollars a lowes, and they have endless uses.

They should be included when you buy an XJ

I actually tried mine with a dremel. Not a good idea. My next idea was a sawzall and that was a bad idea as well. I finally broke down and spent the 33 dollars on the angle grinder. You should skip the sawzall and make the trip to the store. And remember I went the same route you're proposing

Seems like a sawzall would rear and bend up the sheet metal. Is that what happened when you tried it

What's everyone doing for mirrors when they go doorless?

Bolt mirrors to fenders or A-pillar, half doors, get one that you can attach with a bolt through the hinge, or whatever creative answer you can come up with. You could probably find one to clamp on the A-pillar. Most states that I've looked at only require an interior rearview and a driver-side exterior.
