Most thermostats are designed to open at 208 ºF (98 ºC), so one should be able to stay just under the middle of the temp gauge if everything is running properly. This is the norm on my Jeep unless I'm caught in Atlanta traffic...

I know mines running properly I run at 210 but finding something to do on my rig is always a fun thing. If she run at 235 regularly then there's an issue

Okay, I got the jeep up to "normal" operating temperature -- somewhere around 195º - 208º (depending on when the thermostat opens... forgive the newbness, they allegedly open at 98 ºC in Australia... which converts to 208 ºF). The fan didn't turn on. When the AC was turned on, the fan still didn't turn on.

I unplugged the temp sending unit on the thermostat housing and the fan started.

After plugging the temp sending unit back in, the aux fan kept running regardless of whether the AC was on or off, even after it cooled the engine temp below 210º with the AC off.

Is this indicative of a bad temp sending unit, or could this be caused by something else?

Could be a bad temp sensor. I would start by changing that and see if it helps.

Anyone have a good air filter that they would recommend for a 96 Xj with the stock air box?

Always K&N, can't go wrong. I think filters are mainly a personal preference. Ask lots of peeps and get lots of answers.
