XJ Ask the Question Thread
I have a 99n grand cherokee, and need the fan clutch replaced. It's overheating bad while the car sits. Anyhow, im a gal who doesn't know much about cars but would like to do this myself??? ANY HELP? THANKS

new coil springs generally need to settle before you know your true ride height. there are TONS of factors as to how much they'll settle, but rest assured they will.

I'm new to the forum, but this looked like an appropriate place to ask my question, correct me and show me a better place if I'm wrong.
I bought a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, 4.0L, 4-door 4x4 automatic 180k/mi, it was cheap and had a bad engine knock in the bottom end, but once oil circulated, it went away until the engine warmed up enough for the oil to thin out.
Several months later, I rebuild a junkyard engine I pulled from a 1991 Jeep Comanche with 96k/mi. When test driving it for the first time, I noted a drop in rpm whenever I hit a bump, dismissing it unless it became a problem I continued on another 30 miles, when I drove it again it died pulling into the parts store's parking lot, my buddy who works there came and looked at it, and said "I don't know".
30 miles down the road it inexplicably dies, I was able to restart it while rolling and made it to a red-light, and it hasn't run for more than a few seconds since.
The coil is not firing for some reason, I replaced it, tested the ICM, replaced the stator/pickup in the distributor, and the CPS as well, still no fire, I have hunted high and low for a dirty connection or loose/shorted wire.
A friend-recommended-mechanic told me to gap the cps to 30-40 thousandths, not really easy considering th location, nor does the oem part allow for fudge-factor, so he says to file out the bracket holes with a chainsaw file until the air-gap is around .030".
Any suggestions comments or ideas would be wonderful, I've done everything anyone has suggested to me so far, and it has done nothing but cost me thousands of dollars at this point.

okay guys, I'm brand new and I will explain this to the best of my abilities...
I have an 89 cherokee loredo, when you look at the rear view mirror, and look directly above it, attached to the head liner is a little box, what in the world is that. All I have in there is a black box with a circuit board and some transistors, what is that supposed to be, because I would like to replace it, but have absolutely no idea what that is, thanks in advance.
NEEEXXXXTTT, well right next to the cluster there is an on board computer, nothing lights up, so I probably need to replace it as well, I haven't had time to get in there and examine it further, but can that piece be taken out and replaced easily or is that attached to the whole dash/cluster?

A spanner wrench may be needed to hold the water pump pulley to keep it from turning. If so, it's available at most auto parts stores.
While holding spanner wrench on water pump pulley, use a large wrench to loosen large hex nut holding the fan clutch assy to the water pump by turning it counter-clockwise. The threads are right hand.
Carefully remove fan/clutch assy. without damaging radiator.
Remove four bolts holding fan to clutch, and mount fan to new clutch. Tighten bolts.
Replace fan/clutch assy. on water pump shaft, turning the nut clockwise being careful not to cross-thread it. Tighten nut.
Replace fan shroud.
Enjoy a cold drink.

i have 1990 jeep cherokee laredo with the 4.0 liter i6, about a week ago i was wheelin when smoke started to poor out of the hood. when i popped the hood i found it was from transmission fluid spraying from an unknown location onto the fan and belt where it was being thrown everywhere and burning up in the engine. I looked all around and all i could find that was leaking anything was my thermostat housing, i replaced that with a brand new one and i still have transmission fluid leaking everywhere and for the life of me cant figure out where from. If anyone has an idea as to where i should start looking for leaks it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new, but I have a suggestion, you should check your power steering lines, a lot of turning with high torque and RPM's you could've blown a line. It happened to me a couple years ago in a ford truck I had.
And the reason I'm saying this is because some people put transmission fluid in their power steering pumps, I've seen it multiple times, and I don't see how transmission fluid would get to the front of the engine bay.
It could be a pinhole, but there is a lot of pressure in those pumps, so have a buddy get in and start it up and turn the wheels back and forth at a good pace, you should be able to see it squirt.
And the reason I'm saying this is because some people put transmission fluid in their power steering pumps, I've seen it multiple times, and I don't see how transmission fluid would get to the front of the engine bay.

I have a 2001 Cherokee Sport (60th Anniversary Ed) and it drove fine yesterday but will not run today.
I checked battery. I jumped it from another running car after running it down attempting to start. Removed the battery and took it to autozone for cell diag and there's no dead cells and it's sitting around 500 CCA at 100% CHARGE.
It will crank normally but will not fire. The gas gauge shows 1/8th of a tank but I put a gallon into it to make sure the dang thing wasn't lying to me. Also put my ear to the gas tank and heard fuel pump doing it's thing (priming hum when the key is on for a second or so) Checked fuse #11 which is the fuel pump engine control fuse.
Finally I have sprayed a little starting fluid (with ether... yum) in the filter box (intake) and got a little sputter but no love and joy. (I sound like my wife now)
I am thinking something with the ignition system but not sure. This vehicle is new to me but I have had several Cherokee's in the past.
This is the 4.0 straight six but unlike my old jeeps this one appears to have coil packs instead of the usual sparkplug/coil setups.
Any ideas? Also it rained last night and I may have a leak above the rear view mirror. It was broken into a week or so ago but no damage to the interior that I can tell.
