Thanks! Wasnt sure if they were controlled by the PCM.

Hey I've been searching all over the place on this forum and others to find a solution to this problem but no one seems to have an exact fix for it. I have a 1990 XJ with the laredo package. I bought it not too long ago knowing that it needs some fixing up in some areas. One of the parts giving me a lot of hassle right now is my overhead console. When I bought it, it wasn't in exact working condition. It's weird, when you open the doors, the courtesy lights don't come on. The front lights work when you press the buttons but the rears don't work at all. Oddly enough though the light above the cargo space comes on if the driver side front and rear doors are open.
My question is, what the heck is up with this thing? I checked the fuse for the overhead console and courtesy lights and it's not blown. The rear lights could be just burned out but it feels like the buttons don't even really want to go in when you press on them. Any advice or help would be very much appreciated. I saw some other threads and posts on here asking about the same problem but almost all of them got nowhere.

By chance does it have an aftermarket radio in it? I know my old 91 did some real funky things like that when some of my radio wires were connected incorrectly.

I have a 1998 XJ and lately I've had some start troubles. The first time I turn the key, it never seems to want to turn over. The second try it usually starts right up. Should I be concerned about this?

I JUST put myself in that position last weekend. Only problem is that the ring is worth twice what my XJ is.. not sentimentally, but fiscally!

Welcome to the forum. Try looking at the simplest things first. Are the battery terminals tight and clean? And what is the condition of your battery? Also if you live up north cold and heat both have effects on the amperage of a battery.

My 90 kind of does the same thing with the rear cargo light, the rear cargo light will only turn on when the rear drivers side door is open but when all the other doors are open the front ones work. And the cargo light doesnt turn on when the liftgate is open but I'm pretty sure that the switch in the liftgate is bad. I tested the switch on the cargo light its self and it works.

Thanks Outlaw. I just put in a new battery about two months ago, and I brush the terminals and cables down once a month. I'm from Texas, the bipolar state so it could be the weather. Everything is stock except for the radio, but it's been doing it since before I bought the radio.

Well I did recently install a new stereo deck and replace some of the blown old stock speakers, but the truck already came with a crappy aftermarket stereo in it when I bought it. I had the new stereo and speakers professionally installed and they did tell me that the guy who previously owned it must have done the install himself because his wiring was all over the place. Didn't really look like he knew what he was doing. I had no idea that could cause problems for the overhead console.

Yeah I'm starting to wonder if this is a common problem for the older XJ's. The temp display and compass on the OC don't work either. I heard about possibly doing an overhead console swap from an early 90's Zj to an early 90's Xj. Anyone else do this or think that might work? It's kind of a bother not having those courtesy lights when getting into the truck at night.

Default Worried

I took my 89 cherokee laredo in to the shop for an ABS problem. Turns out the ABS pump needed replaced. after replacing that, i still hadn't got it back for a long time. a LONG time. turns out the prior worker who was handling it no longer is "with them" and they have the veteren mechanics trying to find out whats going on. The front left brake pulls the car when you brake. He said it only does this maybe every 2 or 3 test drives, but they can't find out what is causing it. I am starting to get worried. any ideas?
