I thought the axles were a bit different or had some electronic components as well but if it is just the transfer case then it will be done very soon.

1996 was the split year for 27 and 29 spline shafts - the only way to find out is to pull one out and have a look.

Not since the '80s! If both your '98 and your '99 are 4.0L Automatics then it's a direct swap. You need the transfer case, linkage for the shifter, the interior bezel, and the little thing under that which is called the shift gate. Wiring is a challenge but most XJs don't have working indicator lights anyway lol

That is great news, thanks for the help. Both vehicles have working indicators Is it the entire wiring harness I need to move over or is it just a small part of it?

Here is a link to an online image of rear ends that will confirm you have an 8.25. http://www.rustysoffroad.com/skin/fr...r_axle_img.jpg

Replaced the anitfreeze and started it up. Took a couple seconds since the fuel rail had been off for a week. Once it fired up it ran smooth but immediately surged to 5000 rpm before I shut it down. Let it sit while I checked everything visibly. Couldn't see anything amiss. Started it again and same thing 5000 rpm. May have gone higher but I shut it down. What should I be looking for as a cause of this surge to 5000+ rpms. Thanks for any help you can lend. RSWiser

Today I had a friend helping me, we could only start and stop the engine because it would rev up to red line immediately on start up. We could hear a vacuum leak at the back of the engine.

Could a leak in a vacuum line cause it to rev up to the max?

We both looked at the exhaust manifold and intake manifold and it appears to be seated properly. The Fuel injectors and properly seated and no leaks.

Could it be just a vacuum leak.

The line that goes from the valve cover to the intake manifold has a crack in the cover where it attaches to the manifold.

my rear window trim on the outside just started coming apart. basically one of the metal bracket is completely rusted and broke free (I'm guessing it's not the only one and others will follow).

I watched bleepinjeep's video on how you can replace them with 97+ ones, so solution-wise, I'm good. My question is rather how long can I wait before doing it? Can the water significantly get in and create more damage inside? Looking at it I have a feeling it's just a piece protecting the outside and the seal touching the window is what's important, but I'd rather be sure. i'm from the north east so there is bound to be water/snow in the following weeks.

If it's rusted that badly, moisture has likely been getting through for quite some time

You have a Grand Cherokee "WJ."
This is the Cherokee (XJ) section.

I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for. Is there a post or a place where they list parts interchange. I'm looking for direct fit door and other sheet metal interchange. The front end of all Cherokee looks the same to me and so due the doors that have vent windows so are they interchangeable?

Body parts are the same for 84-96 and 97-01.
Parts across all years fit with some modification. Some heavy modification, and some light modification.

The front clip changed four times: 84-86, 87-90, 91-96, 97-01. The rear sheetmetal changes are 96-down and 97-up. Most of it can be made to interchange, but some of the body stamping won't change without major fabrication

What was different about the earliest front clips?
