Well, the 1996 NP242 was direct bolt in my 1999 ax15, I cannot say about other years though.

Both my spare aw4's (1991 and 1999) had the output shaft protruding 1/2" past the mounting face. The ax15 (1999) had 1/2" protruding past the mounting face.

The 1996 np242's input gear protruded 1-3/8 past its mounting face, and so did the 1999 np231 from the 5 speed. So I was kinda relieved that I didn't have to tear into the 242 just to swap gears especially that I just finished rebuilding it. Whew.

XJs, ZJs, YJs, and TJs use the same hubs.

ZJ and TJ are low pinion.

Just replaced axle shafts in my '98XJ with '93ZJ cv shafts. Direct bolt in.
Cv joints disassembled washed and re-greased.

So is this a cheap mod to get CV joint instead of u joints. Can't CV joints pop out easier on impact?

No idea. This is not an off-road rig. Just a daily driver, so there shouldn't be any impacts lol

I have a hole in the back of my muffler and every time I get on the highway and stomp on the gas, I get a really bad smell, most likely coming from my cat.

My question is, if I remove my muffler to fix the leak, put a pipe instead and leave the cat there, will the smell be worse or the same? If I get it fixed properly it'll be by a shop so this fix would be temporary while I gather to cash for a proper job, I'm just wondering if by removing the muffler the smell will get worse.

Thanks

As long as the pipe you put on goes clear to back where the OEM one goes you'll be fine but loud. The smell is exhaust fumes not the cat.
