BTW, I've seen where some poor unsuspecting chap inadvertently plugs his new CPS into that old connector.....

I did make the mistake of leaving my starter out in the rain during this because I forgot it was out. So it rained pretty hard and then the starter sat outside for two days. Could the starter be my grinding issue? Or is it something I missed or did?

1999 Cherokee, 4.0, AW4

I was told the starter was the issue because it wasnt retracting after the jeep started. Replaced it with a new one.
Now about 3 minutes after start up, a grinding noise happens right at the front of the transmission.
So now what?

Grinding = rubbing

Look for contact damage

Sorry you're having so much trouble. Something seems odd about the first startup, the loud click. Sure, I wanted to suspect the starter too but something seems fishy. Maybe take off the inspection plates and look for anything unusual.
What ehall said.

When i removed the starter there were a few flexplate teeth that had minimal damage. Like a tiny chip in them. Just assumed that was from the starter contacting it.

Tried something else: started it up, quickly pulled the starter relay, but still had the noise after a few minutes.

Oh and I put it in reverse to see if anything changed, heard a bang then more banging: rear drive shaft u joint broke and it snapped 2 of four u joint strap bolts.

So what was the purpose of that ...?

Arrgh, something is not right in there, I don't think it's the starter.
If the starter stays engaged or does not fully disengage it would immediately make noise, not this delayed reaction.

It's seriously about to go to Aamco. This is day 5 of not having a car. I don't know how I'm going to keep getting 40 minutes to school.

Might need more direct exposure on this issue to get others involved. Perhaps start a new thread and copy/paste the details. Specifically about proper procedure for reinstalling Torque converter into transmission.

Nothing wrong with a little professional consultation on tranny issues. Just a double check but are the flex plate bolts tight? Wondering if one of them is loose and backing out as it runs.

Will do.

Thats what I'm thinking. They'd at least have a better shot at diagnosing the issue.

That on an 87 or 88. On 89 and 90 to get by the crappy crimps in the harness.

So, you do Tips 5 and 6. Also do 7's drill mod. Easy.

Have you pulled the rear driveshaft to see if the grinding noise stops

Maybe its the tcase and not the trans, or maybe the rear diff

If I put 97+ wiper arms on my 96, front and rear, I shouldn't run into any fitment problems should I?

Nope, I highly recommend it. You get to use the newer J-hook style wiper blades
