While I am thinking of it, occasionally the jeep won't start, and the starter needs to be tapped on once or twice for it to turn over. I'm planning on replacing the starter, but I may as well check to see if anyone here has any ideas on a short (or long) term repair.
Sometimes just a good cleaning can help. Clean commutator with pencil eraser, very fine sandpaper, scotch brite pad. Bit of grease on armature brgs.

Default Oil.... Synthetic or regular.

No need to start a new thread for this I think.

My 90 XJ has about 150K miles. Runs fine, doesn't leak or burn oil.

Do I switch over to Synthetic,or leave it alone?

Its more complicated than that. 95-down used two fuel lines through the front of the tank, one for fuel supply to the injector rail on the engine, then the pressure regulator on the rail returned excess fuel through the other line. 96 moved the regulator to the assembly inside the tank, but kept the metal tank. 97-up plastic tanks also have the regulator in the tank but the opening is on top of the tank, and the fuel filter was moved to the assembly as well. So 96 is a unique production, different plumbing from 95-down, and different layout from 97-up.

Here are your general options:

If you stay with your 96 assembly, you will need to get a replacement metal tank, they are about $100 on rockauto for a good one (I bought a Spectra Premium several years ago and have been very pleased with it). As you said you will need to inspect your assembly and decide what to do from there. Its hard to find parts for the 96 fuel system because its a one-off production. If you stay with the stock setup, you will want to buy spare hangars and whatnot from part-outs, so that you have them.

As was also discussed, you can switch to 97-up but you would need to buy a sender/pump/filter/regulator assembly in addition to the plastic tank. I'm not aware of any aftermarket plastic tanks so you are looking at dealer or used. There are aftermarket assemblies and some parts but generally this is the most expensive because everything is on the assembly and sometimes you have to replace the whole thing to replace one component. Also the sender is not the same, so the gauge readings are going to be off, but I don't know how much.

Another option is to go to a modified 95 design with the metal tank and an assembly with two fuel lines. In particular the 99-up Grand Cherokee (WJ) went to an external fuel filter with the regulator inside the filter. So what you could do is get a metal tank, a 95 assembly, pump to the WJ filter/regulator, and then a local return line from the regulator back to the tank. This would give you serviceable aftermarket components and should keep your electronics working correctly but I can't promise (I haven't done it).

Search for Salad's write up on rotella t6. This should answer all your oil related questions.

The last section in "Buy, Sell, Trade" is called "Wanted".

I switched on an engine with over 200K on it. Works great.
