.

The jeep starts up fine though with absolutely no issues. Just a low gauge. Then the gauge shoots up, I would imagine if it was charging it would slowly go up, no?

Could be a bad cell, bad alt, or bad wiring. Test all that junk and make sure the cables are in good shape.

Or a bad gauge?

I agree with salad. Get it tested (free), and see what they say.

Could be a bad gauge, but I think the circuitry to trigger the GEN light is separate. I dunno how the 1996 cluster works.

Thanks for the information. A grand is too much for the kind of wheeling I do. I am sure the D30 will hold up for me.

I got it tested at autozone. Pretty sure the new guy knew what he was doing though, he started off by suprising me with facts about the xj but they he ruined his credibility by placing the negative lead on my positive terminal...

But regardless. First test with vehicle off he stated that it was putting out 12.52 so it tested fine.

Second test with the vehicle running (to test alt.) was inconclusive because the battery levels were to low. While I'm the jeep it was reading 10 or so volts.

I'm going to go get a second opinion on my way out tonight. Any thoughts? Also once again the power shot back up when I got home.

Did he load test it or just do a voltage reading? What were the second test results?

And I thought you were getting your alt tested

He did not load test it. But when I asked him to test the alternator he said that the battery current was too low to test. I personally feel like he had no clue what he was doing so I'm going to go have it looked at somewhere else in a little bit. But we are getting a lot of snow over here and it has been reading perfect levels as I have been driftng around the neighborhood.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere man. One of the easiest ways to detect it is if you take off the brake booster line and put some seafoam in it... if there's a leak somewhere, you'll see the seafoam coming out of it. Plus, seafoam is a good way to clean the engine anyway.

1997-2000 Chrysler vans with the 3.3 engine, VIN G, Flex Fuel Vehicle, use Bosch 0280155789 injectors. They are 21.3 lbs/hr, 223.9 cc/min at 43.5 psi. Impervious to Alcohol.

I've used these in my '99 4.0 and worked okay but seemed to be a bit on the rich side, per my STFT readings.
