I've got a friend that's got a 1986 Comanche with the 2.8l and he wants to put a different engine in it. How hard would it be to put the 4.0 in it or maybe grand Cherokee 4.7? Does the firewall need to be modified a lot?

98xj, 4.0, ax15, d30/c8.25, 3.07 gears. I want to swap in 3.55 auto xj axles.

1. I want to stay away from the d30 LP, am I fine to swap in an 91'-99' xj dana 30? If it's pre-95 I will swap over my 297x u-joint axle shafts to replace the 260 shafts.

2. For the 8.25, is any 97+ 29 spline xj 8.25 a good candidate to swap?

3. If I were to swap in 4.10 4cyl axles from an xj, and it had a vacuum disconnect axle, is it fine to run if I swap in a 1 piece shaft and block off the disconnect motor spot on the axle?

Much appreciated fella's.

1. Vac disco went up into '91. But yes.
2. Not sure of the cutoff year between 27 and 29 splines. All 29 splines are the same, though.
3. Yep, or just remove the cover, slide the shift collar over, and secure it in place.

Vacuum disco (CAD) stopped after 1991 for the XJ Cherokee.

Best bet is the 3.4 GM motor as it's pretty much a bolt-in. Search and you'll find some good stuff on it.
