Trying to find replacement speakers for my friends 96' ZJ, non infinity sound system. I see the correct sizes are 6.5"-6.75" for the doors. Does there have to be a certain rms range or impedance range when choosing replacement speakers?

Two questions.

What year did 8.25s start being 29 spline? I have a spare from (I think) a 96. Might be 95.

Is a 27 spline 8.25 a big difference in strength compared to a D35?

As far as I remember, late 96s could potentially have 29 splines. Possibly late 97s, though.

The 27 spine 8.25 has this "collar" by the pinion that the 29 spines don't have. And yea late model 96s should be 29 spine IIRC

I know what you mean. It's like a shroud attached to the yoke. My 1999 had that, my 1998 doesn't.

Yes, get the impedence and power handling capacity to match the head unit. Most of em are 8 ohms. If your head unit is 4x35W you eant at least a 35W speaker. I have no idea what the stock spec is.

1996 was the transition year. 27-spline is unfortunately right on par with the D35 due to the low spline count and narrow neck. You can upgrade to a 29-spline though by getting the shafts and side-gears from a donor.

That's what I thought. I guess if what I have sitting there is 29 spline and the gears match I will throw it in. If not, straight to an 8.8

So, just to clarify... the 29 spline refers to the amount of splines that are on both the end of the pinion gear and the yoke that connects to the driveshaft? or is it the splines on the axle shafts?

Splines on the axle shafts as they slip into the side gears.

From the 95/96 possible 27 spline

XJ Ask the Question Thread-forumrunner_20131116_182642.jpg

From my 99 pretty sure its 29 spline
