When I changed out the speedometer gear and felt in the hole there wasn't any fluid in it. Is that normal?

So I'm still having problems with my transfer case shifting back into 2wd. I used to just reverse, put it in neutral and brake and it would pop back but now it's not even working all of the time. I've adjusted the linkage on my 242 but that did nothing. Anything else?
any ideas why my jeep won't drive in any gear? aw4 trans. will not move at all(under its own power)
transfer case linkage is working. tps is new. tcu plugged or unplugged makes no difference. torque converter bolts are not loose. all electronics are clean, dab of dialectic grease, plugged in.

i think i figured it out after 4 days of "google-ing." read somewhere that when putting torque converter on transmission shaft, it has to slide forward till it stops then rotate till it slides on some more. if not, it won't work when everything is all assembled, e.g., my problems. i only slid it on. can't find where i read that now though.
so now i have to drop the trans and see if i broke everything
it bolted together fairly easily actually. i haven't put new fluid in yet as i have driven the jeep last week so i assumed the oil didn't go bad that drastically in so short a time.
i think the answer is the front pump is now broken because i didn't seat the torque converter fully(even though i thought i did)
reasoning:
-when checking the oil, it was always reading high regardless of park, neutral, drive, running, off.
-slight metallic rubbing but not really grinding noise coming from TC area (i originally thought this was because i had bent the aluminum shield thing a few times and thought it was rubbing on the TC) but now i think it's the torque converter rubbing on something for front pump.
- no movement while in gear makes me think no pressure in the lines(goes with #1) so pump failure.
i'm dropping the trans tomorrow hopefully. then either fix pump if its broken, or think about doing an AX15 swap since i have everything already.

AW4? Total system capacity is somewhere around 8.5L, transmission itself holds 3.5-4L. Are you changing the fluid or filling a completely dry system? If changing you'll want to drain-and-fill the transmission several times so that you can change the rest of the fluid hidden away in the torque converter etc. Transfer case is around 1-1.5L. Dexron III/Mercon only for the AW4. NP231 will take almost any ATF so might as well use the same.

Anyone run brown dog motor mounts? It says to tighten the through bolt until the washers cannot be turned then back off the nut to free the washers up. My original through bolt doesn't use any washers and there were none that came with the mounts. For the mean time I just snugged up the through bolt and the Jeep has the worst vibrations it has ever had.
The rubber on my passengers side drag link end is cracked, and also on the drivers side tie rod end. What should i do? Can i just replace the ball joints? Do i need a new drag link? Thanks guys
