Default '94 Cherokee Sport 4.0L Ballast Resistor?

Hello, I am working on a 1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2WD 4.0L. I have a no crank condition. Starter, Selenoid, Battery, Ignition Switch all tested good. I have no volts at the positive side of the Coil. According to the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual, there is a ballast resistor. I can't seem to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Haynes manual is ok for some things, but doesn't really help with others since it tries to cover every year in one manual.

The ballast resistor is for the fuel pump, which if you're having a no-crank situation, is not the cause of your issues.

Here's a link to a write-up I did a while back. One of the solutions/checks should get you back on the road, just follow them in order.

So I had to buy a new fuel rail, which is a jeep exclusive part, for $250. Jeep doesn't even carry the engine in their lineup. Why does Jeep not allow aftermarket suppliers to build and sell their own? Damn injector upgrade...

Did you check JY and for sale sections first? I would hate to spend that much cash when I could have gotten one cheaper from another source.

I wish I had but I was short on time...I need to get it moved before she gets towed. Plus the one I got is black a cool ugh. I hope it's the right one my old one was silver

Default Alignment Issues! Please Help

I'm having some annoying alignment issues. My drivers side front tire is leaning inward quite a bit(negative camber), causing the jeep to pull to the right and also causing excessive tire wear on the inside. The jeep was aligned twice by two different shops, both claiming the alignment is perfect. It's my understanding that you can't adjust the caster and camber on an XJ, only the toe. ALL ball joints are nice and tight. Soo what would be causing my tire to be lean inward?? Neither one of the alignment shops could tell me why. I recently did a 3" lift consisting of leaf packs, coils, and shocks. I did not relocate the track bar or extend sway bar links (I doubt either of these would affect the alignment) the axle maybe shifted to the side a bit from not relocating the track bar, but it shouldn't have any affect on camber. Jeep hasn't been off road yet, so i don't think anything could be bent.. Any help or suggestions are much appreciated! Tires are too expensive to keep ruining! Thanks guys.

That makes some sense...If I push the clutch pedal all the way in I hear a light whining sound and it grinds into gear, If I let the clutch out about half way the sound goes away and the idle calms down. Next Question..Whats the remedy?

If I were to have come into a 04 rubicon transfer case NP 242 would that be a direct bolt-on to a '00 XJ 4.0 4wd?

hi there!

I have a '95 jeep cherokee that i cant seem to get started... i put the key in the ignition, hold down both cluch and break, turn the key...and nothing! my radio works the air works etc.. this happened to me about 2-3 months ago and i replaced the altinator, battery, battery cables, and started relay switch. I spent waaaay too much on this car already.. can someone help me??

From what you listed it doesnt seem you spent too much on it yet. But what you replaced was mainly items with the charging syestem (did you have chargeing issues before?) and this wouldn't address the starting issue much, some but not all.

Have you taken the starter in to get it checked?
Have you check to see if your getting a spark?
Have you checked to see if your getting fuel?
Have you checked the NSS(my auto trans has this unsure about standard)?
Have you check the CPS (my auto trans has this unsure about standard)?

There are many things to look at, you just have to get out there and start checking things off the list. Research, research, research.

Do you get anything at all? Do you hear the click of the relay when you turn the key?

There are two different circuits working together here.

One that is the battery, starter motor main windings, and starter solonoid contacts.

The second is the starter solonoid circuit, it has the battery, ignition switch, starter solonoid, and any safety switches that are build into the system (neutral safety switch comes to mind but there may be others, I have been wrenching for decades but just got into Jeeps about a year ago)

If you are getting the click of the relay but the starter is not working then the second circuit is fine and you have either a bad starter, starter solonoid, or a bad wiring connection.

If not, then it gets more interesting. You have to figure out what in the starter solonoid circuit is not letting power through.

One easy check is to put a test light on the small terminal on the starter and have someone turn the key. If you get power but the solonoid is not pulling in, it's your solonoid... clean the connections and/or replace the starter.

If you do that test and you do get power and hear the solonoid click then it's the first circuit. Check your connections and/or replace the starter.

If you don't get power to the small termainal when the key is turned you will need to look at a wiring diagram for your XJ and figure out what switches are in the circuit.
Start in the middle of the curcuit looking for power and work your way through it till you find the part that is not letting the power through and fix whatever it is.

If you think you are pretty sure it's the starter and are going to be taking it out anyway, make sure to have the parts store test it before you spend money on a new one.

It sounds way more complicated than it really is.
