Okay i have a '99 xj with a np231 "j" transfer case, it's going bad. Does the "j" mean anything different than any other of the np231's? Also can i upgrade to the police package transferecase, the 242? And/or what would i need to do if i wanted to put the 242 in?

Sure you don't have an HO nipple on there? Ho is 3/4 and REnix is 20mm.
