Versus other transmissions or is this your first stick shift? At this point any AX-4 on the road is going to be pretty worn down. If this is your first manual and you want to make things easier on the transmission (albiet a little more complex), hit up the Youtubs and look for videos on how big truck transmissions work. Once you figure out what synchronizers actually do and the idea behind shifting an unsynchronized transmission and rev-matching, your shifts will be a bit smoother.

If I remember correctly 2HI has the arm all the way up, and 4L is all the way down (well, pointing forward) Internally 2HI is when the mode and range forks are in the forward-most positions.

Salad good your here. My issue is I started out with no over drove after having the tranny a little to warm. 2 hours later wouldn't shift outta first. Unplugged the tcu and all as good. I'm guess it's #1 or #2 solenoid. I had Nss issues not long ago.

Could take the case apart and put it 4 low. I did my install in 2 hi and it went perfectly though...

You'll get it. Take it slow. Learn those pedals and its all the same. Clutch, feel, gas release.

So I have a 2001 with the 4.0. Pulled another head from pull-a-part and going to take it to the machine shop in a few weeks. Having it ported and polished. Wanting to have the valleys expanded as much as possible for maximum flow. Questions...
Best valves to go with?
Beat springs?
Rockers?

I want to squeeze as much power out of the engine as possible without building the bottom end or stroking. I already have an intake ported and polished. Looking at some header options.

Best oversized throttle body that's plug and play?

I thought you couldn't get 2nd gear without the TCU, or did it just go to third? (BTW I'm mostly clueless on autos, I'm just trying to remember stuff I've seen everyone else post that ended up working out for people) Fluid still smell and look good?

Gonna suck in a 2.5L. 4.0L is like a diesel at low RPM, I can get up to 3rd gear on flat land without even touching the gas. Just keep at it. When I was looking for a new car I saw my Jeep and decided I wanted it, only problem was I didn't know how to drive stick. I did some reading, watched some videos, and my boss was kind enough to give me an hour or so behind the wheel of his Grand Am. Second time I drove a stick was test driving some Hyundai Elantra at a dealership. Third time I drove a stick was the first time I drove my Jeep lol. Keep at it and you'll figure it out. Don't worry about stalling either lol

I can shift threw all the gears without it, Havent Checked the fluid.

the pic was just supposed to show the selector bolt thing(not sure the name of it). it shows the position of the rectangle pointing forward. it's zoomed in because that is what i was asking about, if i zoomed out it would have just shown a 231 t-case sitting on the floor. if i somehow got a better pic would that help you? front is to left rear to right.

Get it down to the split case halves and remove the chain so the mode ring get go ahead and sit in 4 low then reassemble
