Thanks for the reply. Well they are off and were worse than that before my t-case drop, but yeah I'm really thinking it was a bad install. Trying to see if I can find any proof of this to show the shop. I know a lot of people with mud rig YJs running 12 inch lifts on extended stock driveshafts and haven't ever seen any shred through gears because of pinion angles. Any information is greatly appreciated because regearing is the only thing I haven't done myself on this jeep.

I need some help here. My 4.56 gears have been making a lot of noise, ever since day 1 but it has been getting worse. They are under warranty so I took them back. Turns out my rear-end sounds like a "box of rocks." He is telling me that my pinion angle being off has caused this and even installing my SYE won't help. I have never heard of pinion angles shredding gears but could see how it could happen. Anyone here have any knowledge about this? I don't have the money right now to pay for anything unnecessary.
As you can see, I'm not running anything too extreme. It is off, but it's as close as it's going to get before the SYE.

Watch:
If you've been running like that for a long time that could definitely cause damage. It sounds like your gear installation might be sub-par to begin with but having the pinion gear slamming into the coat and drive side constantly is NOT doing your axle any favours...

How long has it been running like that? That looks like the stock driveshaft, in which case your pinion angle IS totally off. It's set corretly for use with an SYE and double-cardan shaft but in "break **** mode" for the factory setup.

Alright thanks so that could definitely cause damage. I guess I'll just get the gears fixed and install sye. It hasn't been driven very much but probably enough to cause some damage. That's as flat as it could go without pulling my driveshaft off.

Yeah I've heard about that law. They won't read it at store because California believes they'll just erase your CEL so you can pass inspection. Why not buy a reader? OBDII readers are cheap and are good to have around. Better yet you can buy an OBDII Bluetooth adapter for $20 and use it through an app on your phone. It'd be way better to spend the money on a reader, find the code and go from there rather than guessing which part could be acting up and replacing it, that gets expensive quick.
Thanks for the reply.
Well see thing is, a CEl is telling you the majority of what's wrong with the jeep. That what's its there for. A great forum. Ok how's this, lets tell you to change $300 worth of sensors. Oh oh, problems not fixed, now you had to spend the money to read the code. Humble yourself ******* and have a great ****ing day
How about a couple of simple suggestions from someone with past experience with a similar problem? It's obvious this forum has just fallen into the butt-budy system of getting cheap lols on the internet at the expense of members with less than 10,000 posts. It's amazing how the Jeep community is one of the most courteous and helpful groups of people I've ever been involved with, sans this particular forum. Stay on your high horse friend, I'm sure that will work out well for you.
But thanks for the reply and the captain obvious CEL observation. I know that no one in the history of the world has corrected a CEL without first pulling the code, AMIRITE??!?11

Did it yesterday at last. The snow was a little deep to do it right away, ready for the next snow now!

That gear oil looks pretty ruff. Maybe I'll change it soon.

And since there was no more snow... standard jeep testing procedure.

Now I need to make a junkyard run to get a back window that mysteriously shattered

At this point I am thinking about picking one up from HF since this has become such a PITA here in California.
Thanks for the reply.
Ha ha, sure. Humble myself.

I want to be nice to you, but you're making it difficult. How is Syco supposed to know your knowledge base before he suggests something? Do you realize how many new members we get on here who have never held a tool before? Do you understand that most people outside California have no idea that that CEL law exists?

Threw a CEL yesterday and now my Jeep is idling low after deceleration and a couple times has shut off. Starts right up as usual, but it hesitates a bit on acceleration and is shifting late/slow. IAC? TPS?
Also, just got a ProComp steering stabilizer. Install is plug and play on this, right? Do I need to remove anything other than the stock stabilizer?

That ain't just gear oil, that's water emulsified in gear oil. Change it before your bearings give up and/or your diff freezes one of these mornings...
U joint/ball joint press works a mint. Hit it with some PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench Penetrating Oil a day prior.
