how much lift are you running? Once you get above 3" of lift you should really consider a double shear track bar instead of the stock style end. This would solve your problems of blowing joints every few months due to the extreme angle.

adjust the kickdown cable for starters

all Jeep d30 front axles are 27-spline. You have a low-pinion, standard gear cut d30. The kit you get MUST be specific to 2000/2001 XJs (pre-2000 HPd30s are reverse-cut gears)

I'm wondering, on average, are these dependable vehicles? Does it have an iron cylinder head, or an aluminum one? Will it eat head gaskets? Are the transmissions durable? What BIG obvious issues would I not see, not being an Expert on Cherokees?
They are very dependable and will last 300k miles+ if properly maintained. the AW-4 tranny that is in the 96 is also very dependable and strong. Head gaskets are usually not too much of a problem. Cylinder head is cast iron.

Biggest issues tend to be gounding/electrical gremlins, and steering/trackbar bushings going bad causing "death wobble"

You're right! the modern 4.0L is the equivalent of the AMC 242, and is the next step evolution of the 258 I-6 in your mom's car. They are very strong engines, and are well suited for a jeep cherokee's weight.

I am looking for a list of what years and other models came with a Dana 30 high pinion with ABS. Anyone know?

I changed the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter and put in some gumout.

The light actually went off by itself until I got to a 1/4 tank of gas, then it came on again(I felt like the going off on its own was a fluke) and then it started running rough.

I filled the tank and it felt better, but again at a 1/4 tank of gas, it started running rough again and the code is still there( I reset it and it comes back in 5 miles or so)

Now, according to the forum, I should re-gap the plugs, check the wires again, I have some seafoam and more high octane fuel system cleaner.

What else? Should I question the mechanic's ignition coil?

I got this Jeep to play with and still haven't gotten to the budget that I set for it. I'm having fun with it and I know it will be a great toy when I get it done, but this little thing is a nuisance. Thanks in advance.
My analysis of your problem is you have a few things going on. Your misfire is likely fuel supply related. The fact that it goes away when you fill the tank and comes back once it's almost empty is a big red flag that you either have dirt/debris in the gas tank that clogs up the pump screen when it gets low enough, or even more likely that you have water in your gas tank.

The best course of action here is to drop the tank and empty it out completely, and then refill with fresh gas from a major gas company station (better quality control / tank maintenance) and a new screen for the pump if it looks clogged. I'd also replace the fuel filter while you're at it.

If the problem persists, i would look at getting the fuel injectors cleaned professionally, or at least use fuel injector cleaner you buy from the dealership (they tend to work WAYYY better than the generic stuff you find at the auto parts store)

Most XJs 1984-1999 came with HPd30s. ABS is not model specific (it was an option), so it will vary by vehicle (just look for the big booster besides the brake reservoir). Also you can tell if a, XJ does NOT have ABS by looking at the rear diff - if it has a c8.25 rear, it does not have ABS.

They can also be found in YJs and TJs, although i'm not sure if they are high pinion

100w bulbs are illegal for on-road use. Stick to the standard 55w for driving lights/fog lights. I have a cheap pair from Harbor Freight that work great. Advance Auto also has some "baja" fogs that look/work pretty good.

As true as the 100w is illegal for on road use that why I asked him which fogs they for. Grill placed fogs I wouldn't go that hi so I won't blind people but he might Be ok if they are the at the bottom of the grill. But irregardless to that how are the baja's

That's retarded...if they are properly aimed they are 100% legal to use while driving if they are at or below the level of the headlights.
