all Jeep d30 front axles are 27-spline. You have a low-pinion, standard gear cut d30. The kit you get MUST be specific to 2000/2001 XJs (pre-2000 HPd30s are reverse-cut gears)

What can i expect from a Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 engine and an automatic? I'm seriously considering a 1996 I have found. I see them EVERYWHERE, and usually that means parts are cheaper, aftermarket is bigger, and should I need something for it from a junkyard, there will be another one there.
I'm wondering, on average, are these dependable vehicles? Does it have an iron cylinder head, or an aluminum one? Will it eat head gaskets? Are the transmissions durable? What BIG obvious issues would I not see, not being an Expert on Cherokees?

Biggest issues tend to be gounding/electrical gremlins, and steering/trackbar bushings going bad causing "death wobble"
A last question - the 4.0 High Output engine looks suspiciously similar to the 258 straight six that my mom's car (1982 AMC Concord) had when I was a kid. Are they based on the same engine? I remember that being a bit too much motor for that little car, but being smooth, quiet, and reliable.

Okay this Jeep is new to me.
I had a mechanic change the radiator, distributor, coil pack and put on a new head set.
25 miles later, I get a light(PO302)
I changed the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter and put in some gumout.
The light actually went off by itself until I got to a 1/4 tank of gas, then it came on again(I felt like the going off on its own was a fluke) and then it started running rough.
I filled the tank and it felt better, but again at a 1/4 tank of gas, it started running rough again and the code is still there( I reset it and it comes back in 5 miles or so)
Now, according to the forum, I should re-gap the plugs, check the wires again, I have some seafoam and more high octane fuel system cleaner.
What else? Should I question the mechanic's ignition coil?
I got this Jeep to play with and still haven't gotten to the budget that I set for it. I'm having fun with it and I know it will be a great toy when I get it done, but this little thing is a nuisance. Thanks in advance.

The best course of action here is to drop the tank and empty it out completely, and then refill with fresh gas from a major gas company station (better quality control / tank maintenance) and a new screen for the pump if it looks clogged. I'd also replace the fuel filter while you're at it.
If the problem persists, i would look at getting the fuel injectors cleaned professionally, or at least use fuel injector cleaner you buy from the dealership (they tend to work WAYYY better than the generic stuff you find at the auto parts store)

100w bulbs are illegal for on-road use. Stick to the standard 55w for driving lights/fog lights. I have a cheap pair from Harbor Freight that work great. Advance Auto also has some "baja" fogs that look/work pretty good.
