When someone welds a diff, does that mean the gears are now worthless? I know the Jeep will run & the diff will be locked, but if say later I wanted to put a locker in a rear with a welded diff, would I have to replace/repair the gears?
Not sure if this will turn into a discussion ... maybe I should have started a thread ... hmmm ...
Thanks guys.

When someone "welds a diff", they are welding the spider gears together and to the carrier so the wheels no longer turn independently. If you wanted to put a locker in place of this it would have to be a full locker that replaces the carrier as well, not a lunchbox locker.
Thx
(I knew I liked this "ask the question" concept from the first time I saw it.)
Put a Clearwater head on my xj cause the old was cracked, but it has a ticking noise coming from the head area near the exhaust. It increases as the rpm's rise. I'm thinking it's just the new head being noisy and maybe a small exhaust leak. Any ideas's ?

I have been noticing lately that everytime I am waiting in line at the bank drive through (or anywhere I have to stay at a stand still for a long period of time) that I start smelling "burning metal." Similar to the smell of a Dremel on metal. '95 Cherokee with a recent oil change by the way. Thoughts?

Sounds like your tcase isn't engaging all the way when you first put it in 4HI - your linkage needs adjustment.
To adjust the linkage...
1) Shift tcase into 4L (If you can't get it into 4L you may have to do it by hand)
2)Lift jeep or crawl under (you should be able to get your hand up to the linkage without dropping the skid)
3)Loosen the lock bolt on the linkage arm.
4)The linkage/shifter should move freely now.
5)Verify that the tcase range lever (the lever that is attached to the tcase) is fully engaged in the 4L position.
6)Tighten the adj. lock bolt
You are done. It sometime is helpfully if you have someone help you if you aren't sure which way to adjust the linkage. It helps to see how the linkage moves before you start adjusting anything.
