I Have a 2000 european spec Grand Cherokee Limited 3.1 diesel, its spluttering around and cutting out here and there, it starts fine, but splutters under gentle acceleration and feels like there is a loss of power, flooring it cures it briefly, The fuel filter under the hood is new, the air box is fine and has a new filter and there are no fuel leaks, Is there more than one fuel filter on this model or could it be something else, I`m at a bit of a loss, Please help, Many thanks, Regards Russ.

 

I am trying to find the name of the Housing" part my mechanic was telling me I need to replace. My dad just passed away and I got his 98 jeep cheerokee Laredo. It is not 4wd.

When we drive it - very loud coming from back. The guy said that it is u joints and axil and if I was going to replace the axil I might as well buy the whole unit. I saw where he was pointing - the housing part connects both back tires across. He said he could go to salvage yard buy it for around $600 and put it on for $400

I am trying to find the name of the part? Thks

What vehicles have compatible drive train and axles as a 98 cherokee?

 

Ones that bolt in? Pretty much nothing. You can put a Ford 8.8 in the rear without too much trouble.

Beyond that you need to do the front and rear axles at the same time to match lug patterns

 

thats the same thing my diesel jetta did for a while...took it to the shop and they put in new injectors and rebuilt the injection pump...good as new

 

Big Thanks ZachsXJ & sycoglitch! I just bypassed the switch, jumped off the positive end of the fuse box under the hood, through an in-line 30-amp, and ran to a push-button momentary i installed near the shift lever. I just turn the key, push the button, and it starts right up! We'll see about actually fixing the NSS at some point in time. For now, this will do just fine..

 

Although Zach might be able to answer this better, I think once your NSS starts to go it's only a matter of time your starter will go.

 

i have 7inches of lify in the front, stock pittman arm, itll go straight down the raod, but every bump jerks the wheels an the steering wheel is off when the wheels are straight, what should i get, drop pitman arm?

 

ok so on my 90 mj 5 speed 4.0 I am having a headlight issue, when I turn the headlights on they don't come on, but all the gauge backlighting, and both turn signals and my brights indicators all come on and stay on, any ideas???

have you checked your fuses?

 

could also be a bad headlight switch. Apparently its a pretty common failure.

 

The axle housing?

First of all there are no ujoints on the rear axle in a grand cherokee, they are on the driveshaft, and you would feel a pretty strong vibration if these were going bad.

Secondly, if the axle were bad, you wouldn't be moving.


That being said, it could be a few things.
1 - bad wheel bearings - this would NOT require the whole axle housing to be replaced.
2 - bad pinion bearing - this requires the gears to be taken out and *might* be worth swapping the axle for a new one, but this should be replaced on the new one before it is installed anyways - so it doesn't make sense.
3 - the ring and pinion are bad. In this case it would make more sense to swap out the entire axle housing.


I would get a second opinion - this guy doesn't seem to know what he's talking about (or needs to give you a better explanation of what exactly is wrong).


If you do need to replace the whole axle housing, you can grab one out of any Grand Cherokee in the junkyard.

 

I can tell you from experience that it is far easier and less hassle to swap axles than pinion bearings.

especially on the rear axle. It takes all of what an hour to drop the rear axle out of an XJ?

Its essentially 4 bolts for the leaf springs, the brake lines and e-brake cables.

drop out the old axle, swap all the parts over, install the new one. Took me about two hours with some help.

 

For reference sake, the OP has a grand cherokee not an XJ. He also has a dedicated thread for this also...
