XJ Ask the Question Thread
Hi all,
Bought a 1992 cherokee sport recently and have since noticed a safety concern:
Both of the front seatbelts won't stop themselves when you pull on them quickly. Therefore, they are essentially doing nothing.
Is this something that could have been disabled by the previous owner, or perhaps it is broken and needs replacement/fixing?
Thanks for any suggestions...

Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep (plus Plymouth and Eagle) all had recalls back in the day for seatbelt issues. Seatbelts not locking during hard stops and such. It was found that rustproofing (factory as well as aftermarket installed) was dripping down onto the pendulum in the belt lock assembly, causing it to stick in the "unlock" position. The fix was to replace the seatbelt assembly. I know an answer was already given, but I like to put the reason why...

I was at the pick n pull the other day and I was grabbing parts off an 86, it sported the 2.8L badge so I got curious and popped the hood. YOU GUYS HAVE SO MUCH ENGINE BAY ROOM!!! I kind of laughed at how small the engine is (sorry it was just too funny). If you want to throw a 4.0L in you'll have no problem. I don't know as to whether or not you will need some beefing up on the unibody for all the weight + power but I'm pretty sure everything should fall right into place except for the fact that you'll need a stronger transmission. I don't recommend swapping a 4.0L in though (because theres plenty of even cooler choices for swaps), I'd look into an LT1 V8 swap those are cooler than s***, Also diesel swaps are awesome for two reasons 1. being TONS of torque and 2. Fuel Economy oh and I add one more reason in... You can **** off your tree hugger neighbors by flooring it in front of their house leaving a black plume of smoke!!!!!! I've seen youtube vids of a guy running an inline six diesel from a mercedes in his XJ and everything bolted right up, that even includes the existing tranny! So look into those swaps because those will shock any XJ owner when you tell them what you're running lol

I want to swap out a guage cluster I have thats in Metric (like the rest of the world uses) JK!!!! Don't send the Marines!!
Is it stored in the PCM(ECM)? or in the Guages Cluster?
And will it automatically convert it to Kilometers or is there a switch I have to reset?

Hello, i'm new to these forums as i just purchased a 1994 Cherokee sport and it has a few little problems to get it up to par. The "noise" that im running in to has a pretty distinct sound but i cant seem to pinpoint the issue. It sounds almost like fan blades hit something in the front of the engine compartment.
What i have tried so far with no avail has been taking the clutch fans shroud off as it has a crack on the right hand side of the shroud and was zip tied together by somebody but poorly done so i attempted to reinforce and stiffen the shroud slightly to see if it was flexing into the fan. You can see scores in the plastic where its been hit before quite a bit and the shroud had already been modified by being cut out by either the previous owner or their mechanic. I also tried completely removing the shroud as attempt one failed to fix the issue. I know that as a long term this is not an acceptable fix as it will mess with the airflow but it was just a test.
Now the only time this sound really occurs is when im accelerating from a stop and it doesn't even have to be a sudden acceleration even a slow acceleration produces the same result it also occurs a little on braking. If pictures will help out i will gladly post some once its light and i can take pictures, but so far i haven't pin pointed any causes. Any help from somebody that may have encountered this problem would be much appreciated. but as i said it sounds like either the fan hitting something or a vibration. Thanks in advance. I apologize if there is already a thread fro this but my keyword searches were not sucessful as i dont really know what to look for.

I just installed a new rear output seal and bushing in my NP231. Everything went pretty smoothly until the very last step, re-installing the rear drive shaft. It seems that the yoke will not fit past the new transfer case bushing I installed. The link below is the bushing I bought and installed, although the actual part looked slightly different than the photo (little golf ball like dimples are on the inside of the one I received). What am I missing ? I didn't think you should have to force the yoke through the bushing so did I buy the wrong part or screw something up? Thank you guys for your time and I really appreciate any assistance you can offer.

Thank you 564. To help clarify my problem. I do not know how the part in picture 1 works. In your diagram I see 4 primary lines origionating at the intake manifold. when I look at my manifold it only has 2 inlits to plug lines. I think that part in picture 1 has something to do with my problem... Does it turn 2 vacuume primaries into 4?
Thank you
Karl

Well I've been trying to figure out some vibrations in my jeep and I'm trying to rule out my transmission by shifting it manually but I can't shift the shifter down to 1-2. It goes to 3rd fine but thats as far as it goes. I know its not the transmission because it did this with my old transmission as well. So any ideas would be great! I do have an extra shifter I may try comparing the two tomorrow. My xj is an 90 with the 4.0 aw4 np231. Thanks for any help.

I have a 1996 Cherokee Sport 4x4 and it has the Gauge cluster that has a giant fuel gauge where the tach is supposed to be and dummy lights where there are supposed to be gauges. I'm looking into swapping a REAL cluster in at some point because I can't take it anymore. Anyways, I've noticed that whenever I accellerate my needle goes down and whenever I stop really fast my needle goes up. I have a 20 gallon tank and I can be driving around on E for 20 miles and notice that when I fill up; the pump says I'm putting in 18 gallons to top it off. Is my problem from a bad fuel tank component or is it just the cluster itself? If it's the cluster, I'm going to the pick n pull tomorrow morning and I'll just go buy one to put an end to it lol
Thanks in advance,
Jon
