I was at the pick n pull the other day and I was grabbing parts off an 86, it sported the 2.8L badge so I got curious and popped the hood. YOU GUYS HAVE SO MUCH ENGINE BAY ROOM!!! I kind of laughed at how small the engine is (sorry it was just too funny). If you want to throw a 4.0L in you'll have no problem. I don't know as to whether or not you will need some beefing up on the unibody for all the weight + power but I'm pretty sure everything should fall right into place except for the fact that you'll need a stronger transmission. I don't recommend swapping a 4.0L in though (because theres plenty of even cooler choices for swaps), I'd look into an LT1 V8 swap those are cooler than s***, Also diesel swaps are awesome for two reasons 1. being TONS of torque and 2. Fuel Economy oh and I add one more reason in... You can **** off your tree hugger neighbors by flooring it in front of their house leaving a black plume of smoke!!!!!! I've seen youtube vids of a guy running an inline six diesel from a mercedes in his XJ and everything bolted right up, that even includes the existing tranny! So look into those swaps because those will shock any XJ owner when you tell them what you're running lol

Hey this guy I know modified his airbox simply by drilling holes in it (98 grand cherokee.) He originally put a bunch on side of the airbox with no effect, then he put some in the front of the box and apparently that worked.
It gives the exhaust a pretty decent rumble, and his engine apparently is running smoother as a result. Just wondering what are your thoughts on this, and if I should do this as well to my 97 cherokee or is there something bad with this mod.

Keep in mind Cherokees are not what you would call aerodynamic. You're probably looking at 20-25mpg MAX under optimal conditions.
I would start by doing a complete tuneup - plugs, wires, fuel filter, oil change, tire pressure check, o2 sensor, etc. These things have a HUGE impact on fuel usage if not functioning at 100%.

LOL I just wanted to make sure.
I've had to deal with some pretty stupid people at my work with car "problems", and all they turn out to be is the owner is clueless. Nothing like having someone complain about clunking coming from the back of the car for a week and the wife is afraid to drive it (for fear of something breaking), and the trunk is full of golf clubs and golf ***** rolling around. Owner put them in a week ago and can't make the connection. We took the clubs and ***** out, took the owner on a test drive with us (no clunking) and he was amazed, we "fixed" it. I told him we didn't fix anything, we took the clubs out. Ya know what the kicker is? We got back to the shop, put the clubs BACK in the trunk, and the customer left. The stupid S.O.B. was back within 10 minutes complaining about the clunking again! We put the clubs in his back seat and sent him out the door...

Lol thats freakin hilarious, I hope you charged him for wasting your time. No worries man, I understand how some people are, I'm going to school for automotive and my teachers have some pretty good stories. Anyways I fixed it, turned out my shifter was crap. Picked one up from the yard and replaced it yesterday. All good now, shifts all the way down to 1-2 now.

We charged him an hour labor to put his golf clubs in the back seat (and for being a complete idiot)...
Forget it. None of the chips or tuner boxes have much effect on the Jeep 4.0L engine. If you are looking to improve gas mileage, look into hardware upgrades - ie. free flowing exhaust, 4 hole injectors, air intake, removing roof racks, Low rolling resistance tires, that sort of thing.

i know the basics and plan on doing it. along with a lift and tires. hahaha im not looking for 30mpg or anything. but right now im doing about 13-14 mpgs driving with a light foot and doing the speed limit. i fear something may be afoot. will start to investigate.

Just get a new cluster, or a cluster that has lower mileage than the current cluster - then get it adjusted to read the correct mileage in metric. You can roll odometers forward without issue, but not backwards.

I GPS'd my speed-o last night and somehow after I got my 31's on, it's right on target.. Awesome!! I was looking to do a cluster swap aswell and I can't find any with lower mileage haha I love having 68k on a cherokee. It's like a long awaited dream come true! But in all seriousness, I think theres speedometer shops that can roll back the mileage and do the legal paperwork needed right?

only a dealership will i believe. They need to do the swap in house so they can verify the mileage stored in the ecm
