Default AW4 question??

Hello guys,

im trying to fix a problem im having with my speedo gear.. I have installed two gears and each time i checked on the gear it was completely ****. The first time i can say i did not do it properly, but the second time i did count and gear the speedo. I am at the point that i have the tail housing off.. I have removed the ring clip, speedo drive gear, spacer, and propeller.. so right now its a bare output shaft..

My question is about the propeller( gray piece with four arms on it), I think the PO may have done some trans work and possibly installed it wrong.. but i dont know the guy never even told me it had a trans problem, just a hole in radiator and bad a/c.. but here are some pictures that show what has happened and what the shaft looks like..

1st pic: Output shaft with tailcone removed
2nd: Close up of Speedo dive gear, spacer, and propeller.
3rd: Inside of tail cone. Red stuff is my last speedo gear i put in.
4th: Close up of speedo gear carnige.
5th: Not sure what the green thing is but looks like a speed sensor.. Havnt looked into that yet..

6th pic: Tail cone bearings, a lil worn but not sure if i need to replace those.
7th: Cleaned inside of tail cone.
8th: What i think is the proper way the propeller, spacer, gear, and clip ring should be. ( Compare close up Pic2 and this one) Propeller has be switched around..

Im looking for pictures that shows the full output shaft assembly, so i can see how it should be setup.

I cant get the images from my FSM but it shows the propeller rotor with the arms nearest to the front of transmission.. In my second pic it shows the opposite, my propeller rotor arms are nearest to the drive shaft.

you are playing with vital stuff there. The thing you call propeller is the tranny speed sensor rotor and it is necessary to the tranny computer to calculate shift points. Put it back together and remove the hall sensor (green one), if the rotor is right underneath you're ok, otherwise it goes the other way around.

Thanks,
I just got off the phone with a trans shop and the guy told me the same thing.. So when i get off of work thats what ill be doing. I know im playin with some dangerous stuff but its stuff i can handle without breaking the bank. I wont go near internals but i do want to learn..

I need to figure out why my speedo gear keeps getting worn down.. And i really think that rotor was in backwards..

Check that the speedo cable turns freely, seems as the driven gear is stuck somehow.

I dont have a speed cable, 98 is when they came with the electronic speedo..

And yea i will be replacing the tail bearing and seal.

Update: Checked out the rotor yesterday and it seem that it was installed properly.. The arms lined up with the VSS.. but i did notice that inside the tail housing directly across from the speedo gear i have some circular markings. Which i think is my speedo gear coming out of the adapter.. so ima replace that as well.. and replace all VS Sensors.

Update:

Installed new extension housing bushing(Trans shop), also replace the output shaft seal. Reinstalled rotor, key, spacer, drive gear and snap ring. Reinstalled trans mount and bracket. Replaced all shift solenoids even thought only one was bad.

Replacing solenoids and cleaning up the extension housing and sensors, i dont wanna say fixed but cant think of another way to put it. anyways, i no longer have a CEL. I will be receiving my scanner today so to double check and read live data is on my list of things to do..

Ask the trans shop if the circular marking in my trans is usual and he notified me that the marking are fine. Also asked about my drive gear, which he gave me a new/used one for free just incase this still happens..

Try searching for the gear out of a 231 or 242 transfer case, they should be the same.
