This is a very interesting swap please post some pictures. I am very curious of how the RD28 was mated to the AW4. I probably know why it is not going faster. The tranny stays in first gear right? It is very simple. Since the 4.0l has been removed the TPS (throttle position sensor) is missing and the tranny needs that information to shift through gears. You have a couple of options: the elegant and the redneck. The elegant solution is you find the Nissan TPS and, check that the output voltage is a descending range from approximately 5 volts to 0 (when you accelerate, volts go down), split the wire and give the signal to the tranny. Elegant option 2: you go to the junk jard and buy a cherokee TPS, build a bracket on the engine and hook it up with a little arm to the nissan throttle.
Redneck solution you unplug the tranny computer and shift manually through gears,(1-3-4, no 2) then later on you build a manual switch to shift manually through all the gears.
It has no power? well it's a 2.8 and has just 100hp and 132lb.ft of torque... lol Please upgrade i am curious.

thank you for the info!
i dont know about the year.. but it has AW4 trany, and used to be V6 gas engine 4.0 liter
(does that help?)

yes, the TCU was not connected after all...
im not sure if my research is right.. but it says that if the trany isn't getting a signal it automatically is in 4th gear when in D..? which sort of makes sense.. it cant go up but on a flat road it is able to gain speed.. after awhile.

the transplant was been done by the previous owner.. but we will pull out the engine again for some maintenance.. (since it was in storage for awhile)
will post pictures of disassembly and reassembly

everyone who's seen the transplant seems to think that the engine will have the power to bring the rig..(there are 2 versions to the RD28 the 4cylinder and the 6cylinder.. we have the 6 cylinder)
the engine used to be used on a NISSAN PATROL..which is considerably heavier than the Cherokee..

after TCU has been rewired.. i am planning to tap into it and install a manual shifter.. 1-2-3-4.. has anyone tried it? will it be a good idea..?
(planning to go trailing with this rig)

THANK YOU AGAIN!

Here's a quick question or two; I have a 1987 Cherokee Pioneer with the 4.0. My starter turns but doesn't turn the engine, I'm assuming it doesn't engage into the flywheel. It sounds very weak and slow.. like every old Chrysler Jeep and Dodge Ram I've heard, but my other Cherokee was also a 4.0 87 and didn't sound like the same starter, but I believe that starter is shot so I can't use it. Anyway, I am looking at a new starter, correct? And if so, I have an 86 Wagoneer with the sad, anemic little 2.8 that I had replaced the starter on shortly before the transmission died on it. Would the starter from the 2.8 work on the 4.0?

Are you in Britain or in Canada? They never sold the Patrol In the states. The 4.0 is an in line not a V6.
Telling me the year of your vehicle (facelift or not?) would help me to know wether the TCU is a self standing unit or it was integrated in the Engine Computer (therefore gone).
You're talking about the RD28T (turbo), it has 125hp and 188lb.ft torque, if it came from a Patrol GR maybe a little more, but still less than a AMC4.0 (177hp and 220lb.ft). The RD28T is basically the minor son, less fuel consuming (but still a lot for a diesel) of the SD33T, that was mounted on the older Nissan Patrol and on the International Scout II (and curiously also in the jeep CJ10A).
If the TCU is unplugged you should be able to shift in 1st gear if you move the lever all the way down to 1-2 position.
There are plenty of writeups about the manual shifter, it has been done before, especially the Wrangler guys who have swapped the AW4 in place of the stick.
I suggest you regear to 4.10 ratio because the 3.55s will suffer with the diesel.

No, it's a different starter on the 2.8. Go to the JY and pick a starter out of any 4.0 engine you find, doesn't matter wether its a wrangler, a cherokee or a GC...

If it is a 90 you *should* have the AX-15 (made after march 1989 on your door frame). If not you have the peugeot ba/10.

Dead nuts way to tell quickly though is get underneath and look at the way the tranny is split. If the tranny has a split from front to back (bolts together on the top and bottom) its a BA/10 if its from side to side (bolts front half to back half) its a AX-15

im in the philippines...

ohh.. my mistake.. so it was a straight 6..

no idea if its a facelift or not.. will try to check the year on the registration papers when i get ahold of them..also i will post pictures of it..

is there anything that i can look for to help me determine if the TCU used to be integrated with the ECU..?

ill try out that shifting in 1-2 postition..
the regear sounds like a good idea..where can i get the new gear ratio?

Default Trans fluid level

Hello,
I have a 1995 XJ...Auto.. I noticed my trans fluid is over full..I think I overfilled it by mistake. the warm level is right at the first bend on the stick....no leaks or anything..am I safe to leave it like that , or do I need to drain some out?....
Also ever sense i have had this XJ it has seemed to shift to 2nd gear a little slow or soft (long ) shift.. any ideas or is this the norm for the AW4?
Thank you so much for the help..have a great day!

It'll work, the only thing you need to check is the input gear. at the very least if you're good with your hands you can swap the input gears between the cases and it'll bolt right up.

Your best option is to remove the metal backing strips and drill out the old bolts. You'll have to weld some new bolts into the drilled holes in the backing strips (tack weld the heads).
New strips can be purchased but they are hella expensive.....like $40 each!
