Sounds like your TC chain is going, get it fixed soon before it tears apart the casing. Do NOT use 4x4 till you fix it. Does it have enough fluid in it? Low fluid could cause it to be excessively loud also. Either way get it checked soon

wait a minute, if it's a gear noise it is normal, if it is more a drag/hit it is the chain.

we're not sure if the automatic transmission was converted as well..but the lever inside is still original cherokee..so we're not sure whats under it..

the problem:
it can't run any faster than 20MPH.. and it doesnt have any power at all..
>>can't even make it up the driveway

the mechanic's theories:
1. the computer box wasn't removed or isn't functioning properly.. due to the conversion..
>>> do automatic transmission cars have a separate computer box for the transmission?? or does it go along with the engine's computer box..

2. the clutch lining inside the transmission is worn out..and needs an overhauling kit..
>>>do automatic transmission cars still have a clutch?

what to do..help please!!
What year is the cherokee?
Check if there is the tranny computer under the passenger side lower dash panel (knee hight).
This is a very interesting swap please post some pictures. I am very curious of how the RD28 was mated to the AW4. I probably know why it is not going faster. The tranny stays in first gear right? It is very simple. Since the 4.0l has been removed the TPS (throttle position sensor) is missing and the tranny needs that information to shift through gears. You have a couple of options: the elegant and the redneck. The elegant solution is you find the Nissan TPS and, check that the output voltage is a descending range from approximately 5 volts to 0 (when you accelerate, volts go down), split the wire and give the signal to the tranny. Elegant option 2: you go to the junk jard and buy a cherokee TPS, build a bracket on the engine and hook it up with a little arm to the nissan throttle.
Redneck solution you unplug the tranny computer and shift manually through gears,(1-3-4, no 2) then later on you build a manual switch to shift manually through all the gears.
It has no power? well it's a 2.8 and has just 100hp and 132lb.ft of torque... lol Please upgrade i am curious.

I'm just kinda nervous bout the whole swap its my daily driver and I wanna do it right and not have to mess around with it for weeks. I can do the thermostat , intake/ exhaust gaskets thats not gonna be a problem. Its more the sensors and stuff im not good with electronics i heard that the 91 doesnt have a knock sensor and the 90 does, so just wondering if that or any other computer stuff would be a problem because i know in 91 they redid the computers and put bigger injectors and stuff in. Mostly I'm worried about the knock sensor.. any suggestions/knowlege would be greatly appreciated!

Don't worry the Knock sensor isn't that important, i drove fine with the connector unplugged for at least one year till i found out, and i never noticed any difference. Anyway if the block has the predisposition just screw it in.

The cherokee drives good in 2wd aswell. The 4wd should be used only when really necessary, that means when you get stuck in 2wd you shift to 4wd and get out.

dude, it's an '88... 22 years... lol my defrost has never worked and it's not the fuse. The fuses are under the dash panel drivers side.

Unplug the wire from the coil to the distributor and stick in a spark plug to check spark. If you have no spark measure the CPS impedance.
