XJ Ask the Question Thread
Here is a picture of my engine bay so you have something to compare to.
Not sure if this helps you or not but figured I would give it a shot.

Easiest way to tell the renix apart from others is the closed pressure cooling system with the pressure bottle mounted up there.

Hey guys,
I have a 94 XJ which seems to be stuck on the setting for defrost and floor vents because those are the only vents that air come out of. I have searched for vacuum leaks but could only find one hose with an elbow not connected to anything. The area that it is in is on the passenger side routed in front of the battery, close to the lower part of the radiator. I took out the radio to look at the climate control unit but could'nt see anything wrong. The vacuum things wth the levers all seem to be holding (I could move them but they would move back). But when trying to change the mode to other settings, nothing happens. Any suggestions? All f 5speed eedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

ok, i have a question, i have a 99 xj with a 4" lift and 31" street tires. my parents gave it to me for my first car and i am going to upgrade. but it is my daily driver and i drive it a lot. the one thing is that it very noisy. you cant hear the person in the passenger seat when you hit 70mph, and the steering wheel shakes, the body feels very flimsy, and it pulls to the left a lot. i was wondering if this was normal or does my lift need an upgrade ( all of the bushings are pretty much done) thanks

okay guys, I'm brand new and I will explain this to the best of my abilities...
I have an 89 cherokee loredo, when you look at the rear view mirror, and look directly above it, attached to the head liner is a little box, what in the world is that. All I have in there is a black box with a circuit board and some transistors, what is that supposed to be, because I would like to replace it, but have absolutely no idea what that is, thanks in advance.
NEEEXXXXTTT, well right next to the cluster there is an on board computer, nothing lights up, so I probably need to replace it as well, I haven't had time to get in there and examine it further, but can that piece be taken out and replaced easily or is that attached to the whole dash/cluster?
Thanks a bunch guys, any help with be appreciated.

i have 1990 jeep cherokee laredo with the 4.0 liter i6, about a week ago i was wheelin when smoke started to poor out of the hood. when i popped the hood i found it was from transmission fluid spraying from an unknown location onto the fan and belt where it was being thrown everywhere and burning up in the engine. I looked all around and all i could find that was leaking anything was my thermostat housing, i replaced that with a brand new one and i still have transmission fluid leaking everywhere and for the life of me cant figure out where from. If anyone has an idea as to where i should start looking for leaks it would be greatly appreciated.

Hell.oh
I have a 2001 Cherokee Sport (60th Anniversary Ed) and it drove fine yesterday but will not run today.
I checked battery. I jumped it from another running car after running it down attempting to start. Removed the battery and took it to autozone for cell diag and there's no dead cells and it's sitting around 500 CCA at 100% CHARGE.
It will crank normally but will not fire. The gas gauge shows 1/8th of a tank but I put a gallon into it to make sure the dang thing wasn't lying to me. Also put my ear to the gas tank and heard fuel pump doing it's thing (priming hum when the key is on for a second or so) Checked fuse #11 which is the fuel pump engine control fuse.
Finally I have sprayed a little starting fluid (with ether... yum) in the filter box (intake) and got a little sputter but no love and joy. (I sound like my wife now)
I am thinking something with the ignition system but not sure. This vehicle is new to me but I have had several Cherokee's in the past.
This is the 4.0 straight six but unlike my old jeeps this one appears to have coil packs instead of the usual sparkplug/coil setups.
Any ideas? Also it rained last night and I may have a leak above the rear view mirror. It was broken into a week or so ago but no damage to the interior that I can tell.
Thanks in advance if you can help me out I promise you will be my personal hero for at least 30 seconds.

No fuel? Check the fuel pump.
sounds like no-fuel to me.
If the pump is running I'd make sure there's pressure at the rail. There's a valve on the fuel rail that looks almost like a tire valve, with the pump primed the fuel should squirt out of it. If its not something is up with the fuel system.
the way to check the ignition system is to take a spark plug boot off and hold it near a metal part of the engine, if it sparks while you crank the jeep, thats probably not your problem.

I have three XJs: A daily driver, my old daily driver with issues, and a parts rig that's pretty much intact except for the body (yeah, drives and everything, but the top is chopped off and no interior). I also have about 4 other vehicles and a couple tractors around.
The plan was to put the engine from the chopped one in the old daily driver and have it as a back up rig for my wife and I. Then I started off roading and found that it didn't need an engine swap, but just a simple idle control valve. Cool! Wheeled it a few times and fell in love with it again, and started cutting the fenders, dropped the sway bar, and started looking for cheap tires....
Found some 35s for 300, but before I bought them I changed the valve cover gasket to chase down an oil leak, and added a coolant additive a friend gave me to try out, then went one last time as a stock rig to meet up with my cousin and thrash it a little.
It didn't pan out, and as I was trying to work on my CB to find him I noticed quite a bit of coolant on my bumper... and found the endcap was leaking. Not only that, but the oil leak I thought I'd fixed wasn't, and now it appears that about a quart per hundred highway miles is leaking out of the head gasket onto the exhaust, which I'm afraid of catching fire...
Anyway, it's a '93 with 240k on it, the 4.0L. Nothing's wrong with the frame, no creaks or anything other than I put a dent in the cross member, and I still can switch everything back to stock (bumper, fenders, swaybar).
I have the engine from the parts jeep, a Renix, but that doesn't really matter, that I can put in it, or I can just fix the head gasket for about $30, but I'll have to buy a new radiator. I've not invested anything into lifts, lockers, tires, or much else other than the parts vehicle and some oil.
The problem is that what little time I have before winter I need for moving, settling in at the new place (animals, fences), fixing up and selling the old place, life stuff, so I wouldn't be able to work on the engine swap until winter, and probibly not much else until then either, if nothing else comes up in the meantime. I also have a truck that I need to get rid of or fix, which will take up time as well. I just flat out don't have time for a while, and don't know if fixing up the ol' beater will even happen.
So, (sorry fo the long story), it seems my choices are: Wait for the time to fix the thing up, and spend another load of money making a good wheeling rig... and not get back on the trail until sometime next year if I'm lucky, or dump the two XJs and the truck and buy a CJ5 that's all set up with lockers, tires, a winch, radio, and everything else the XJ doesn't have for about $3k, not a bit of work needed, and I can be on the trail within the next month, if I'm lucky!
My question is, Should I keep the first jeep I've ever owned and love to drive, not knowing that even after working on it it still could have problems, or get out of XJs and into an unfamiliar rig that doesn't need any work?

You must know the three main jeep leaks:
1 rear main seal
2 oil filter adapter o-rings
3 valve cover gasket
Since you tell us that it is leaking copiously on the exhaust pipe it is 90% the RMS.
haha lolz.. what kind of answer do you expect from us jeep ckee geeks.. fix the thing and have fun doing it!

Ive got a question on my 99 limited, at idle when its warmed up and at operating tempriture it sounds like its got a rod knock but when im driving i hear nothing at all, i also hear alittle but of valve tick but i figured thats normal with something that has 124,569 miles on it, but the knock is concerning me and my oil pressure gauge is pinned past 80psi, anyone have any idea what the problem might be? For the oil pressure i figured its just a sensor but the knock is what is concerning me
