XJ Ask the Question Thread
Bang on the key, pushing it into the ignition switch. Then try turning it. may take a few trys. That will work to get you going.
Don't know how long you can do that without it finally giving up completely.
Dorman makes a replacement ignition switch that has extra tumblers to rebuild your cylinder with.
That way you won't have to go buy new transponder keys and get them programmed. EXPENSIVE!!
You can use your old keys and fob.

I was lucky that the jeep died in the driveway.

Im looking for either one but they have to be exactly like pictured.
Im going to do a hood shock conversion and would like to do it as cheap as possible within reason.
For just the studs i found 4 for $9 plus shipping.
Just the bracket with ball is $3 per bracket plus shipping.
My original plan is to find the studs, get some angle iron and fabricate my own brackets and just buy brand new hatch shocks for the hood. Iv heard i could do just 1 shock but would prefer 2.

My 99s rear hatch has one of the little ball studs (lol) don't know if its easily taken out though. Haven't had it apart.
I have a 96 xj and this morning my car stalled and wouldn't restart straight away. It was revving higher than normal when on cold cycle. When it restarted it was like it was flooded.
I had the car scanned due to the engine warning light coming on and codes came on regarding engine temp too cold and low voltage from map sensor.
Anyone have any ideas?
I also checked the throttle body thinking it may be carboned up but it's fairly clean with no blocked passages.
Any info would be much appreciated.
Cheers,

Do you know roughly how many pounds for the xj hatch struts are? Iv found 150 pound strut pair for 25bucks online and figured 150 would be plenty for the hood dont ya think?

Hello everyone. First XJ and just had a question or 2. Nothing too bad. Ive owned a few CJ's YJ's and a TJ Rubicon that I'm getting ready to sell so I'm not a complete idiot to jeeps. Anyway I'm getting ready to get home from a deployment and was searching craigslist for a new Jeep. Since my wheeling days are put on hold for a few years I decided to go with something a little easier to load and unload two little girls. I found a 1997 XJ Country with an NP242. Seems to be pretty rare so I plan on snatching it up. I don't plan on doing any crazy mods with it. Just convenient stuff like an overhead console and maybe a few things to keep it running better. With the console in mind I had my wife take a picture to see if it already had one and I got this. Apologize if the pic comes out big or doubles I'm not sure which format to use to link them.

If anyone knows what this could be I would appreciate it. I figure its a keyless door sensor or something but not positive. The current owner has no clue what it is either. Her husband bought her the vehicle. Thanks again and any other advice on this model / year would be awesome.

Indeed that is an infrared keyless entry sensor, but I thought that style was phased out earlier? I was sure that 97+ was RF-based with the sensor being part of the overhead lamp module. Could be put there by someone or I could have my dates wrong.

Hmmm that worries me that they posted the wrong year for the vehicle. Anything I can have my wife look for to make sure its a 97+? I have pics up in my album but not sure if something on there can give it away.

Not in those pics is the rear hatch, which is steel instead of fiberglass.
