transmition slip in 1st gear
I've tried searching for a thread to help me but I can't find one close enough.
I drive a 96 XJ Country 4.0, 251,870 miles on it.
I've noticed here recently that when I go from reverse to drive or when I come to a stop too fast and try to take off the transmition will slip a little and jerk hard. But it only slips in first gear, so I was reading up on my manual and found that there are two adjustment bands on the transmition(I think that's what they are called lol). I was wondering if maybe they could have come loose over the years, and if so which one would most likly have come loose. I would assume that I would be the front band that controls first gear, but I don't want to go tearing into the tranny without being for sure. If anybody has an idea or any suggestions please let me know.
The PO took amazing care of the jeep no body damage, perfect maintanace, never offroaded it. If u think I got a chance at saving the transmition I want to try before it completly goes out.

Sorry, but there is no band adjustment on the AW4 automatic transmission.
If the fluid is at the correct LEVEL on the dipstick, if the fluid is RED in color, if the fluid does not smell BURNT, then it is possible that the mileage is catching up with this transmission.
I am not a big additive guy, but if you want to take a shot at getting more miles out of this transmission, I would try draining the fluid in the pan and refilling with fresh Dex/Merc III compatible fluid and one bottle of LubeGard Red (widely available at parts stores including NAPA). I have two friends in the transmission business and LubeGard is the only additive that they would consider using.

The above transmissions with adjustable bands are not the transmission you have in your 96. You have the AW4, made by Asin Warner. No band adjustment. Really. A web search will verify this if you don't believe me.

I've noticed mine doin that too. Like if I don't give it time to engage before I hit the gas it slips a little. I figured the clutch in the tranny is goin. I have 233k myself.

If it isn't the TV cable adjustment, throttle position sensor issue, or a fluid problem............it is likely that this problem is internal to the transmission.
