trans slipping/grinding
Hi all
I have a 98 4.0 auto cherokee.
So thr problem started as a powerfull clunk from the tranny tunnel at around 50mph. Now when its at full temp it grinds like trying to put a manual in gear without using the clutch. This happens in D, 3rd, and 1-2. Also it happens at any speed uphill downhill or flat. I'm finally throwing a code but have no means to get it out of the foothills to a parts store.

A couple more things. U joints seem to be nice and tight. I replaced thr TPS as my buddy had a spare lying about. And the symptoms seem to happen upon accelleration or maintaining speed, it does not happen when decellerating as far ad ive noticed.

What is the condition and level of the fluid in it? When was it last changed?
Also give this a go: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/free-quick-fix-41821/
Hard to give any meaningful advice without knowing what codes are thrown, they could be related or not, but the above applies to pretty much every situation with an automatic tranny.

The link seems to only be about adjusting the kickdown cable. I adjust this on all my jeeps fairly regularly and have done it in the past couplr days on this jeep (after it started acting up). Thank you very much for the response though.

Well could keep throwing out random guesses like brake pedal switch, or maybe the last person put ATF+4 in there instead of Dex/Merc, but they're just guesses without knowing the codes lol
