Default auto trans slow to "warm up"

1996 grand cherokee ltd, automatic 4wd, 265K miles

Trans fluid is fine, fluid looks nice and pink.

When it sits a week and I start it and put it in gear and press the accelerator, it just sits there, not moving. After 5 to 10 seconds with my foot on the accelerator, it gradually creeps forward, then begins to accelerate. This might take 15 or 20 seconds altogether. After this, she drives normally for the remainder of the time. I can shut her off, come back and she starts and drives commpletely normally. This only occurs when I let her sit for several days, and there are no other problems with it (that I am aware of).

Does anyone have any idea what might be the cause?

Thank you.

just looking at the stick. When it acted that way, I really was expecting low fluid level. Should I try checking the fluid level another way? Or just add some more and see what happens?
Thank you for the reply.
