Default 88cherokee xj tranny fluid question.

Ok so ive had my cherokee few months. I noticed that the tranny fluid is not actual tranny fluid. Looks like reg motor oil. I was told that it can b a substitite if tranmy fluid is not available. Should I leave the motor oil ( I hope its motor oil lol def not tranny fluid) in the tranny or drain it put good tranny fluid in?

auto trans or manual?? if its manual some people run gear lube or trans fluid. its personal preference. i do not daily drive my jeep so i run dex III in mine. people tend to run gear lube when you get alot of miles on the trans is quiets it down if it starts to get noisy

If its an auto you should for sure be running trans fluid. If its a manual gear lube is what you need.

Not necessarily. Some manuals use auto trans fluid too. Check and research specifications to be sure. Don't guess.

I'm not sure about the Jeep stuff, but Ford started using auto trans fluid in the World Class T-5 manuals in the early 1980's. It cuts down on friction losses. T-5s were found in Mustangs among others.

That's why I made the point of researching and not guessing. Somebody previous to you could have gotten it wrong. After all, our transfer cases use Dextron III.

Not guessing here. The jeep manual tranny takes gear lube. Althought ansin-warner approved the use of 10w-30 in some of their trannys. None of the ax5 or ax15 use tranny fluid.

Fill out your profile. We still don't know if it's stick or auto.

Well, you can't leave oil in it if that's what it really is. What's the alternative? FWIW, AW4s are very hardy trannies.
