Default Please spare me that told you so about this engine swap!

I have come to find out I have made a grave mistake! I thought I had done the proper amount of research to replace my 1995 XJ 4.0 motor. I have been searching the web for exactly what I wanted to do when lo and behold a local 4.0 showed up for an amazing price with low miles, a quick Google search told me that it was simple and possible to swap in the motor from a 1999 TJ. I have my old motor removed and the new one in the condition I picked it up in. I have been going over the wiring harness and every other component for a week now and I have come to the realization after 15 to 20 hours of work, 600-700 profanity laced tirade‘s, and an impending divorce (from my spouse not my jeep) but I am in over my head. Has anybody out there done a similar swap? Or could possibly lend a bit of advice.

Sincerely,
Jeep XJ NOOB

You strip the new engine down to basically just the long block then you use all the sensors, wiring, accessories, intake and exhaust manifolds from your 95 engine.

I just found a thread today that says the motor mounts are different. I keep finding juxtaposed info.

According to this if it is truly a 99 and not an 00 or newer they are the same.

I saw that but on another site I saw otherwise. I’ll stick with this.

You should be able to look at one next to the other and see if the mounts are the same or not. If they are not the same I believe there are companies that make kits for swapping a tj motor into a xj. Like all of the above said used everything off of your motor on the new motor. It is possibly to use a combination of the two pieces and sensors, but it's very difficult and is not for the faint of heart.

Stay here with us and you'll be fine. Quit bouncing all over the interwebs. You're getting excellent advice here.

Get us the block part number off the driver's side of the engine.

That's a 99 to 2001 block from an XJ Cherokee. should work just fine.
