Default New Purchase

My sister-in-law just bought a 1998 4.0l xj with 121,000 on the clock, its solid, drives good, everything works, was just wondering if the price was right, paid $3200.00 after taxes and plates. Any issues with 98's orwas it the 00-01's??? Thanks..... BTW, there is clunk in the rear diff when going from park/rev to drive. All stock!!

good price for the year and mileage. it will go over 200,000 if you treat it right. not sure about the cluncking, check your u-joint to see if everything is snug and there.

'98 seems to be a good year. I've had mine for 6 years now and no major problems. Like they all said, just take care of it.

As far as the clunking goes, mine did the same thing when I bought it. I found that if I stop at Neutral in between, I don't feel the clunking. I couldn't find anything obviously wrong when I checked it out and I've just gotten into the habit of doing that. 6 years later, it's still running, so I don't suspect anything too serious from it. Just a noisy shift on a noisy XJ.

I should add that it wouldn't hurt to change fluids in both diffs and the tcase.

I paid $5800 for my very nice 87000 mi 4wd limited, and had to drive more than 700 miles to get it. I looked for mor than 2 months to find a decent 4wd cherokee. Mine also clunks in the rear end....

Good price if she treats you right. Out here in CO they are expensive and many are beat to hell.

Best of luck man.

98 is a very good year for the XJ. Price is reasonable.

The problem with the "clunk" is very likely to be the slip yoke on the rear driveshaft. What happens is that over time, it becomes dry and needs to be regreased. Earlier models were bathed in ATF fluid, but the design changed from 97 and up.

A very common problem on your vintage; I've had to perform this on my 99 a few times already. After that, no clunk.

Below is a link to an EXCELLENT thread that will spoon feed you through what you need to do.

Try it.

Hey thanks for the link. Looks like I've got another project to add to the list.
