Default looseness in wiper linkage

Is there a balljoint or something in the windshield wiper linkage that wears out and is replaceable? I can move the blades about 2" by hand and they slap back and forth when the window is just misty and the wipers are on delay. 2000 XJ.

The bushings in the linkage are probably shot. Pull the cowl cover up and see where the slop is. Dorman part number 49445 is the set of six bushings, about $10 on Amazon

Yes, good chance it is the bushings. Team Cherokee has them for $4.25 for the set but it looks like they are for '91 to '96 only. There is some info there that might be useful however. https://teamcherokee.com/front-winds...che-1991-1996/ I bought a set a few months ago while I was ordering other stuff. The ones on my '91 are not too bad yet.

If you do this let us know what is involved in the replacement task. Something tells me it will not be that easy but hopefully it is.

That Dorman link says it's for 2000-97 so that should work. Thanks guys. I seem to remember some of the GM units are rubber ends links that look like Heim joints and you have to buy the whole transmission. I'll pull the cowl cover and check it out.

If you're gonna do this job, remove the whole assembly. And while it's out re-grease the motor's internal gears with a moly grease.

Thanks. I needed this.

Slop in wipers are so bad they're wearing the paint below the windshield. Was gonna buy a whole new wiper assembly.

You see how good this forum is? If there's a problem with a jeep, there's a good chance somebody here has faced it before and is willing to share their experience! The XJ is sort of unique in this respect since it has remained mostly unchanged for so many years. The ZJ has had so many changes over the years and models that it's hard to keep up. The WJ and WK, WK2 changed every year and still does.

I thank you guys for such a quick informative response, although I'm probably going to wait on the fix until the weather gets better. I will order the bushings anyway. Thanks for your insight Cruiser!

Hey all old thread I know but perhaps I can still get a 👀. That Dorman part says it’s good till 2000 and I’ve got a 2001. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for mine but can anyone confirm? Either way I’ve got them on order so I’ll find out the hard way whether they’ll work or not 😂 if I don’t read anything back from this post. Thanks all, love this forum!

Put the bushings in hot water to warm them up first. They are hard to press in and you may need a clamp and a socket to help press them in. I also lube the inside of the socket with some yellow lithium grease.
