Unhappy XJ loose steering

Hi,

just got my Jeep last week. The steering is odd. When driving the car swivels on the road without me moving the steering wheel.

The tie rod and the drag link are loose i can rotate them with my hand. I guess I have to replace the ends they seem to have no rubber left.

What parts should I buy?

Can I drive in this state without breaking something?

Thank you for helping me out!

Marvin from Colorado

Just get some parts from Autozone or whatever unless you need heavy duty for offroad. Have an alignment shop check out the front end also. May be something you cant see.

Well, like you mentioned, you seem to have some loose parts and missing rubber. While loose parts sounds bad, some of the steering and front suspension parts do have play in them and can be twisted, or moved a small amount. I'd say look for some YT videos of the parts you suspect are bad and watch someone else's experience with those bad parts and see if they look and act like yours. Also, if your caster (a front wheel alignment necessity) is off, it will cause the front end to move around while driving. Think of caster on your jeep just like the front wheels of a shopping cart. They have to be at the correct angle to track forward and stay straight. Do you have the correct size lower control arms? That can effect caster because it will push or pull your axle and cause the caster alignment to be bad.

thank you!

looks like i have the iron rock over the knuckle steering system and according to this discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/Jeep/commen...grading_youre/

the loose joints are normal

it might be my caster angle. i will try that
