Default Hole in t case

So I bought a Cherokee, and went to change t case fluid and it was bone dry . I added fluid and drove it, everything seemed to work. I changed the fluid several times to clean it out(first time looked like mud). It developed a bad leak so I took it in for what might be a bad gasket and apparently there is a hole.

So I need a new t case. I'm assuming the vehicle cannot be driven without fluid in t case? Not just when using 4wd? Also, is it hard to install?

just swapped mine last friday. Wasn't bad. took about 4 hours by myself. Had to have my brother help get the new one lined up and on the shaft, but other than that, all went pretty well. get a can of PB blaster ahead of time and spray all the bolts on the chassis(t-case crossmember) and the axles real well, as many times as you can, this will help when it comes time to unbolt everything.

the only bolts you really have to worry about breaking are the crossmember bolts. and the lower you can get the t-case the better, disconnect the linkage as well as exhaust to get at those upper nuts holding the case on. theres 6 of them. It can be a one man job getting the new case on, but it isnt fun.i had to do a few sets of t-case pushups saturday night myself.

i poked a hole in my t-case early this summer. I jb welded it back up and have been running it since.

i do have a belly skid, but i backed into an upsidedown J shaped rock, lucky i know.

A better question might be: How did you get the hole? If it was from a worn chain or something better get the new case.

What kind of fluid did he use also. The wrong fluid can cause leaks.
