Default Confused about New stereo install.

So I bought myself an Alpine deck and some JBL's for my xj. JBL's were no problem. The deck however is giving me some troubles. And i have installed car stereos 4 or 5 times now.
I have everything hooked up correctly EXCEPT for the power to the deck. I connected the power to the deck to the stock black wire with the yellow strip in the dash which is supposed to be direct power from the battery. The illumination wire to the deck is currently connected to the pink wire in the dash. This is supposed to run to the fusebox and then the battery of course.
The problem is that my deck will on turn on when my headlights are turned on (not daytime running lights). So if I want to listen to music I have to turn my headlights on. Kinda crappy.
The stock stereo worked fine.

Any tips or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Don't worry about the illumination wire. (cut, disconnect it)

My wiring diagram says the RED/WHITE line is the hot power line. ORG should be for the decks lights, and BLK/YEL is for dimmer control from the dash. PM me for a copy of the diagram if you need one.

I've been going by the wiring diagram in my haynes manual. I'm assuming it's correct. Thanks for the help guys! I'll try again in the morning and let you know if it works!

There's your first problem. Haynes said I had 96 and older wire colors (is a 96), but actually had
97 & up colors.

Got it pretty much figured out. Only problem is I lose all my eq settings every time I turn off my truck. Other than that it's great!
Thanks again guys. Cheers!

if you loose all your settings when you turn off your deck then you have the switch power and the constant power backwards once again odgreen is correct. test lights are great
