Default New from San Diego

Hello fellow humans, I've been the creeper on various Jeep forums for years, and finally joined one.

I've had several XJ's, and several ZJ's over the years, and recently picked up a clean 96 XJ 4L 231/8.25/AW4 with 105k on it. Other vehicles are 2014 Frontier SV 4x4 with a little lift and BFG A/T and Skids, and a 2014 Focus SE which I am selling to get out of the payments. The new XJ will be it's replacement.

I bought the XJ in Bend, Oregon and drove it down here to SD last weekend. I averaged 22 mpg on the trip, best tank netting 23.3 and worst (so cal driving) netting 21.2. Bone stock, 235/75s, sagging rear, a little rusty underneath, (floor pans need work), bushings shot..., but surprisingly it drives pretty good still, passed smog easily, and didn't overheat in the 95 degree temps coming down the 395. Amazing.

Soon-ish Fixes include: Complete coolant flush with CRL and new coolant, bushing replacement of front susp; end links, sway bar bushings, steering stabilizer/bushings, pass side lower ball joint, drivers door hinge pin thingy install.

Soon-ish mods include: OME 2-3" (haven't decided yet) springs/shocks, 30x9.5 or 31x10.5 BFG KO2 on Ravine wheels, or 245/75/17 KO2s on 17" Steel Charger wheels (about a 31.6x9.6) possibly WJ lower arms depending on what tires I get. Tinted windows, CD player and better speakers so I don't go crazy singing to myself. Possibly T-case drop and Skid plate. Recovery hooks front/rear. Possibly Olympic Top Hat rack- because they are rad and I could put stuff up there.

Ultimate goal for the XJ. Keep it fairly stock and LIGHTWEIGHT (3500 lbs or less) (3" lift max) because I never do any crawling or have a need for maximum flex or clearance. 31's provide all the clearance I'd ever need, and I mainly want to keep/maintain a super reliable, decent gas mileage XJ.

Main uses: Driving to beach to surf, driving to high Sierras or other backcountry destinations to camp and fish.

I probably will end up doing more skids as I take it more places. I banged up the Frontiers front crossmember when it had just 1000 miles on it. Luckly it didn't do anything major..and since then I've learned that skid plates really can save you in the backcountry.

A few pics of the 96 bone stock.
