Clear Coat/Paint fail
Hi All, Ok we have here the dreaded clearcoat/paint fail....Some say the clearcoat fails, others say its the paint under the clearcoat failed...EITHER way , it has failed....My son had an early Toyota that had a similar fail, and after talking to a number of people that know more about his than I..there is no easy fix....Or NO fix...sand it down to base coat and repaint...
Well this girl is never going to be a museum piece, but I want to try a few things... Most of the damage is on the raised part of the hood. They sell a black vinyl kit for that part of the hood that looks pretty sweet..
I have ordered Mopar green to touch up areas that the vinyl wont cover..And the area I am calling the cowling, under the wipers, will be painted in a textured black paint...
I mean, look at it..How much can I mess it up ?? I'll keep you updated..

Mine is pretty bad, the whole hood looks like it is matte finished, lol.
I figured one day I might repaint it, but it cuts down on glare so I might just leave it
Post pics after you get it all cleaned up!

From what I could see, yours is a total surface fail...it looks pretty good from afar.. If this works for me it could be of use to you....
I'll post progress pics, as well as preprerations to the surface before paint and vinyl...

In the mid 80s in to the mid 90s they started using robots to paint the new cars,And used a cheaper clear and gave less of a clear coat thickness on top of that.Thats why cars of the time frame had the clear coat flaking off like this.

the roof of my 01 has started to fail in the clear coat dept... ive considered going with a matching color wrap on the hood and roof, beats sanding and repainting because youll never recoup the funds you throw at a paint job on one of these

I used the paint in the link below. It's flat black not satin. I used green 3M pads first until the surface felt smooth. Didn't want to spend a lot of time on it.
