Hi NMroamer - welcome to the forum!
Could you provide a little more details about the issue you're having? I'd recommend adding your specific XJ details to your profile so folks can see what your XJ is and take into account anything that might be relevant. At least the year, engine and lift info, but best if you include transmission, differentials and any upgrades you have.
As far as clunking over dirt roads, it would be helpful to know if it's something that's isolated to one side or the other or if it occurs on both sides. Do you have any steering issues (looseness, pulling to one side)?
Typically the first step is to take a look under your Jeep and see if there's anything that's obviously amiss - I'd start with looking at your Sway Bar links - are they whole (they are known to break), are the bushings at the top and bottom in good shape? Are the frame bracket bushings tight? (When mine went bad I could look in one side and see light around the bar.. )
The next thing I'd check would be your shocks - are the bushings at the top and bottom OK? Is the hardware at the top and bottom tight? Is the top mount in good condition and not rusted out (it seems pretty flimsy - the PO of my 95 appears to have welded new metal at the top due to rust.)
If the sway bars and shocks look good, I'd move on to the front axle u-joints (assuming your XJ is 4wd) and see if they're nice and tight.
