Lolz - I'm cheap and impatient! But I got a standard ordered.
Well I did it, swapped in the 746s I got from programbo. Cleaned the throttle body while I was at it. It was horrible! So much buildup it may as well have been an exposed compartment component.
Fired it up, no leaks and took it for a quick spin. Finished at dark so I'll take her for a legit ride tomorrow. Also the throttle is a little sticky coming back to idle. I probably cleaned it too well and need to put a little lube on the butterfly.
Otherwise she is smooth as butter! New plugs, rotor, cap, new injectors and a clean TB. Throttle response is great and lots of power. I'm super stoked! Thanks for all the help and tips, y'all.

Remember what I posted about the TCU?
Got your Trans switch in Power or have you bypassed the switch yet?

I keep the trans switch in power mode at all times, did that early on. I will eliminate it at some point.
So what is the deal with the TCU? I can't find them on any parts store or anywhere. How does one go about finding a newer TCU (transmission control unit?) for an AW4?
Looks like my ECU should deliver by Wednesday. Oot oot

87 shifted the worst. It was the first yeat of the AW4 and 4.0 combo.
Shifted earlier than the 88 and laters and was programmed to lock the torque converter in 3rd with the shifter in D, then would unlock and shift to OD, and then lock once again.

Well that's no good. Power mode is a lot better than comfort but I'll admit, it is not great. My f-150 shifts a lot better lol. Ya, we have a couple of pick-n-pulls in the area... My 11 year old will be stoked, boys love junkyards.

Still working on tracking down a TCU. ECU should be here tomorrow. I'm really happy with the injector swap and TB cleaning. It was better right away but after putting 50 miles on it, it seems to have smoothed out even more. Like others have stated, there is a definite seat-of-the-pants improvement, better throttle response, etc...
It had been idling a little rough after I changed the plugs. I had gone through the vacuum system and thought it was good but while cleaning the TB, I noticed the vacuum line to the MAP sensor was cracked in half, right as it exited the TB. ZOIKS. I replaced the line and the idle is back to normal.
Also cut a couple of holes in the hood and installed some louvers for vents. I'll post more pics of the process once I have a chance to get them off the phone. Scary, that moment when you make the first cut in an otherwise perfect hood.

Thanks mang! She was bone stock and a real plain Jane when I found her, but super clean and only 130k. My wife has a nice car but likes to drive my truck and kind of scoffed at the plain little XJ.... at first. Now that I have got new shoes, painted a little, some tint and a few other things, I can't keep her away from it. LOL The interior is flawless, original plaid suitcase look.

That reminds me: while fixing that problem, I noticed there are 2 holes on the back of the TB, but I only have one vacuum connection. Is there supposed to be another line? It runs fine. The one that is connected runs to the MAP sensor, so I figure that is pretty important.

Do tell? Is it covered in your "tips"? I may have missed it.

Cool. Thanks. So mine is hooked up correctly, now. I have a spool of 1/8" high-temp fuel line for fixing my mower, chainsaw, weedwacker, etc... so I cut a length and used that instead of buying a new plastic line that would eventually break again.
So what are you up to? It seems like the MAP needs the vacuum from the TB to do its job. How and why are you going to eliminate it? I trust you, I'm just curious.

Move the IAT to the air cleaner housing. Plug the hole in the TB to the MAP. Install a fitting where the IAT used to be and run it to the MAP.
